EASLEY ANNOUNCES $50 MILLION INVESTMENT FOR GRANVILLE COUNTY One N.C. Fund Grant brings 55 jobs and helps CertainTeed Corporation expand Oxford plant RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley announced today that CertainTeed Corp., one of North America’s leading manufacturers of building materials, will add 55 jobs over the next three years and invest more than $50 million to expand its current facility in Oxford. The expansion is made possible in part by a $300,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund. “Companies such as CertainTeed continue to thrive and grow in North Carolina because of our continued investments in education, workforce development and infrastructure,” Easley said. “This expansion is further proof that we are making sound investments to ensure that our state remains highly competitive in the global economy.” The company’s Oxford plant manufactures commercial and residential shingles and employs more than 200 people. The new jobs will be manufacturing and assembly positions with an average salary of $670 per week. The expansion will involve CertainTeed’s new line of state-of-the-art laminated shingles. Hiring for the new expansion will begin in late 2005. The One North Carolina Fund, which helps the state recruit and expand quality jobs by providing financial assistance to businesses or industries deemed by the Governor to be vital to a healthy and growing state economy. Through use of this fund, nearly 12,000 jobs and $1 billion in investment have been created since 2001. “This expansion would not be possible without the commitment of our employees who make excellent roofing products,” said John Donaldson, president of CertainTeed’s roofing products group. “I am grateful to them, our customers for their strong support, the city of Oxford, Granville County, the state of North Carolina and many others for their assistance in making this project a reality.” CertainTeed is headquartered in Valley Forge, Penn., and employs about 7,000 people with more than 40 manufacturing facilities throughout the United States. In 2003, the company had sales of about $2.3 billion. CertainTeed is a private company but it is a subsidiary of Saint-Gobain Corp., headquartered in Paris. Saint-Gobain had worldwide sales of $27.2 billion in 2003, and has about 171,000 employees in 46 countries. Other contributors that made today’s announcement possible are the N.C. Department of Commerce, Granville County, Norfolk Southern Railway and Progress Energy.
