MICHAEL F. EASLEY GOVERNOR AMATEUR RADIO RECOGNITION AND APPRECIATION WEEK 2007 BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA A PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, North Carolina is home to over 18,000 federally licensed amateur radio operators, also known as "hams" according to the Federal Commun icati9ns Commission; and WHEREAS, December of 2006 marked the I OOth anniversary of the first successful broadcast ever of the human voice by an amateur radio operator who conducted his earlier tests on North Carolina's Outer Banks; and WHEREAS for the past century ham rad io operators have experimented with and perfected technologies we all enjoy today such as television, high fidelity FM, cellular telephones and VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol); and WHEREAS since 1949, North Carolina an1ateur radio operators have been meeting on the air daily for the past 58 years at 7:30 P.M. on 3923 KHz. for The Tar Heel Emergency Net to exchange good will and to test their ski lis and equipment to respond in an emergency; and WHEREAS amateur radio operators have a proud tradition of public service and have provided emergency communications following numerous hurricanes, floods, tornadoes and storms in North Carolina; and WHEREAS Amateur Radio was forn1ally inducted into tl1e U.S. Citizen Corps of the Department of Homeland Security because of its value in disaster operations, and. all municipal emergency management organizations are now mandated by the federal government to include an1ateur radio in their emergency communications planning; and WHEREAS June 23rd and 24th mark the 75th annual Field Day, an event in which amateur rad io operators around the world test their equipment simultaneously under simulated emergency conditions; and WHEREAS all North Carolinians have benefited from this dedicated corps of volunteer communications professionals; NOW, THEREFORE, l, MICHAEL F. EASLEY, Governor of the State ofNorth Carolina do hereby proclaim June 17-24, 2007, as "AMATEUR RADIO RECOGNITION AND APPRECIATION WEEK'' in North Carolina, and l call all citizens to pay tribute to the AmJiteur Radio operators of our state. MICHAEL F. EASLEY IN , l have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol this twenty-fourth day of April i!l the year of our Lord two thousand and seven and of tbe Independence of the United States of America tbe two hundred and thirty-first.
