' . MICHAEL F. EASLEY GOVERNOR OLDER AMERICANS MONTH 2006 BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH. CAROLINA A PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the State of No1th Carolina joins the Nation in declaring May as Older Americans Month; and WHEREAS, this year marks the 41" Anniversary of the passage of the "Older Americans Act" by the United States Congress; and WHEREAS, America's aging population reached a turning point in 2006 as one of our nation's largest generations, the baby boomers, started turning 60 becoming eligible for programs under the Older Americans. Act; and WHEREAS, this year's national theme of Older Americans Month, "Choices for Independence," reflects a continued commitment to help our nation prepare for a larger aging population, and to bolster the efforts of baby boomers and older. adults to achieve healthy aging, maintaining the dignity they deserve and providing them with more opportunities to live longer independently while contributi.n:g to c-ommunities they cherish; and · WHEREAS, North Carolina wishes to celebrate the many contributions of its neady 1.5 million. citizens age sV.ty and older, their families, and their caregivers; and WHEREAS, North Carolina supports the creation of Livable and Senior-Friendly Communities across the s.tate to enhance and encourage healthy aging 'of its citizens; and WHEREAS, May has traditionally been celebrated with tributes to older persons through ceremonies, events, fairs and other activities at Senior Centers, and other locations; NOW, THEREFORE, I, MICHAEL F. EASLEY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 2006, "OLDER AMERICANS MONTH" in North Carolina and I urge all citizens of this State to pay special tribute to 'the older population, their families, and providers of aging services. MICHAEL F. EASLEY ~RE~OF, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the in Raleigh this twentieth day of April in the year of our Lord two thousand and six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirtieth.
