CLYDE, N.C.—One hundred and twenty-five Western North Carolinians from 28 counties were presented the North Carolina Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. The award recognized individuals, groups and businesses that made a significant contribution to their community last year through volunteer service. “Volunteering is an investment in our community that results in immeasurable benefits,” Gov. Mike Easley said. “I salute the winners of this volunteer service award. People who serve their communities unlock the tremendous power that we all possess to strengthen our communities and, ultimately, our world.” The North Carolina Award for Outstanding Achievement was first awarded in 1979. The Award honors citizens who have shown concern and compassion for their neighbors by making a significant contribution to their community through volunteer service.
