faft of ,orf4 Qlarolina PAT McCRORY GOVERNOR HUNGER ACTION MONTH 2013 BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA A PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, hunger and poverty are issues of grave concern in the United States and the State of North Carolina; and WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina is committed to talcing steps to raise awareness about the need to combat hunger and to provide additional needed resources to citizens; and WHEREAS, North Carolina has a high percentage of citizens experiencing food hardship every month, and nearly one in four children under the age of five are food insecure; and WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina is committed to working with the NC Association of Feeding America Food Banks in educating people about the role and importance of food banks; and WHEREAS, more than a million and a half (1,650,000) individuals in North Carolina rely on food provided by the members of the NC Association of Feeding America Food Banks annually; and WHEREAS, members of the NC Association of Feeding America Food Banks distributed more than 123 million pounds of food in 2011-12 through its network of2,600 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other community organizations; and WHEREAS, food banks across the country, including the seven members of the NC Association of Feeding America Food Banks, will host numerous events throughout the month of September to bring awareness and attention to encourage involvement in efforts to end hunger in their local community. NOW, THEREFORE, I, PAT McCRORY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim September 2013, as "HUNGER ACTION MONTH" in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and afixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this fifteenth day of August in the year of our Lord two thousand and thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-eighth.
