fafr nf nrf4 @arnlina PAT McCRORY GOVERNOR GEAR UP FOR COLLEGE WEEK 2013 BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA A PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a federally funded program designed to increase the number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education; and WHEREAS, GEAR UP provides six or seven-year grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools, as well as, throughout North Carolina by means of the state grantee's statewide dissemination of college access information; and WHEREAS, in commemoration of 14 years of successful North Carolina GEAR UP programs which are administered by the University of North Carolina General Administration; and WHEREAS, North Carolina GEAR UP programs have served more than 25,000 GEAR UP students in 28 target districts, and 22,000 more GEAR UP North Carolina students and their families in 11 target districts in the current grant, through a cohort model beginning no later than the seventh grade, and follow the cohort through high school; as well as, students in the priority 12th grade level in target high schools and students across North Carolina from the state grantee's statewide dissemination of college access information; and WHEREAS, GEAR UP focuses on students from low-income and underserved communities who might be the first person in their family to go to college; and WHEREAS, the College Foundation of North Carolina a free, comprehensive website www.CFNC.org. where students can go for help to plan, apply, and pay for college; and WHEREAS, during the week of September 23-27, 20 I 3, North Carolina students in GEAR UP schools will be invited to participate in at least one college-going activity, including afirming the GEAR UP college pledge, participating in tutoring for rigorous college preparation coursework, attending a college visit or college fair, using CFNC.org, and many more services designed to increase the college-going rate in North Carolina; and WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina joins GEAR UP in its commitment to preparing youth for college, and encourages students across the state to participate in college-going activities because being prepared for and applying to college is the first step toward earning the degrees that will help them succeed in today's global economy; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Pat McCrory, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim September 23-27, 2013, as "GEAR UP FOR COLLEGE WEEK" in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and afixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this ninth day of July in the year of our Lord two thousand and thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-eighth.
