Mike Easley appointed three new members and reappointed one member to the North Carolina Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System Board of Trustees. Easley appointed Allen C. Meadors of Pembroke, Joyce Elliott of Asheville and Norwood Clark of Raleigh to serve on the board. Easley reappointed Michael L. Dupree of Butner to the board. Meadors has been the chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke since 1999. Meadors is currently serving on the National Nominations Committee for Outstanding Young Americans, the Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics and the Commission on the Liberal Arts Agenda. Elliott is a retired teacher who became president of the National Association of Teachers in 1997. Along with her work at NCAE, she is a chairperson of the North Carolina Teacher Academy Task Force and the Buncombe County Schools Improvement Team. Clark has been the owner of his own accounting firm since 1987. Prior to opening the firm, he worked for the state of North Carolina for 22 years as director of audits with the Department of Health and Human Services and controller of the Division of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services. Dupree has been first sergeant for the N.C. State Highway Patrol since 1998. From 1978-1994 he was a trooper, and from 1994-1998 he was a line sergeant. Dupree has worked with the N.C. State Government Worker’s Compensation Advisory Committee as well as the N.C. Worker’s Compensation Pilot Project Committee. The North Carolina Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System Board of Trustees administers retirement system laws for teachers and state employees and local government members of the retirement systems. The board has 14 members. The Governor appoints 10 members; the Speaker of the House and President Pro-Tem of the Senate each appoint one member; the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Treasurer serve in the ex-officio capacity. The N.C. Senate must confirm all members. Each member serves a four-year term. ###
