EASLEY APPOINTS PLAYER AND PORTER TO MILITARY AFFAIRS COMMISSION RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley has appointed Richard L. Player III of Fayetteville and Freda Porter of Pembroke to the N.C. Advisory Commission on Military Affairs. Player is president of Player Inc., a licensed general contractor and a real estate broker. He is a member of the Cumberland County Business Council’s Military Affairs Council, the New Century Bank of Fayetteville Board of Directors, the Crown Center Commission Board of Directors and the CARE Clinic Board of Directors. Player received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Methodist College. Porter is president and CEO of Porter Scientific. She is the secretary for the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Pembroke’s Board of Trustees and a member of the N.C. Department of Transportation Minority Expansion Council, the N.C. Technology Association, the American Society of Engineering Education and the American Society of Quality. Porter received the Carpathian Award for Speaking Out from the N.C. Equity Commission in 1996. She received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from UNC-Pembroke, her master’s degree in applied mathematics from N.C. State University and her doctorate degree in applied mathematics from Duke University. The commission advises the governor and the secretary of the Department of Commerce on ways to strengthen the state’s relationship with the military. The commission also strives to protect military installations from downsizing and develops a strategic plan to provide initiatives to support long-term viability and prosperity in the military. There are 30 commission members, each serving a two-year term. The governor appoints 15 members. ###
