EASLEY REAPPOINTS COHEN, SIEDOW AND WELKER TO SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY BOARD RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley has reappointed Norman R. Cohen of Charlotte, James Siedow of Durham and Mark E. Welker of Clemmons to the North Carolina Board of Science and Technology. Cohen is president of Unitec. He is vice chair of the North Carolina Board of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education Center and a member of the UNC Charlotte Board of Charlotte Research Institute. Cohen received his Bachelor’s degree in textile chemistry from Philadelphia University and his Master’s degree in business from Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J. Siedow is vice provost for research and a professor of biology at Duke University. He is a fellow with the American Society of Plant Physiologists, a fellow with the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Siedow received his Bachelor’s degree in botany from the University of Texas at Austin and his postgraduate degree in plant biochemistry from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. Welker is assistant provost for research and the William L. Poteat professor of chemistry at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. He received his Bachelor’s degree in chemistry from UNC at Chapel Hill and his postgraduate degree in organic chemistry from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla. The board identifies, supports and fosters the identification of important research needs of both public and private agencies, institutions and organizations in North Carolina. The board has 19 members, each serving a four-year term. The governor appoints 16 members. The Senate President Pro Tempore and the Speaker of the House each appoint one member. The secretary of the Department of Commerce also serves on the board. ###
