BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE GOVERNOR LUNG CANCER A \V ARENESS MONTH 2009 BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA A PROCLAMA TlON WHEREAS, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in orth Carolina and the United States according to the American Cancer Society; and WHEREAS, lung cancer takes the li ves of more North Carolinians each year than breast, prostate, colon, liver, and kidney cancers combined, according to the American Cancer Society; and WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society predicts .more than 6,670 citizens of North Carolina will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year; and WHEREAS, former smokers and people who have never smoked comprise the majority of new cases of lung cancer each year; and WHEREAS, lung cancer has a 15 percent, five-year su rvi val rate according to the American Cancer Society; and WHEREAS, early lung cancer diagnosis and management protocols exist, yet have not been embraced as the standard of care; and WHEREAS, fLw1ding for lung cancer resea rch falls far short of that for other less fatal diseases; and WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina demonstrates its dedication to patient support and advocacy for people living with lung cancer and those at risk for the disease; · NOW, THEREFORE, I, BEVERLY EA YES PERDUE, Governor of the State of orth Carolina, do. hereby proclaim November 2009, as "LUNG CANCER A \VARENESS MONTH" in North Carolina and do urge our citizens to learn more about lung cancer and to do all we can to make lung cancer a public health priority and offer compassion to le with lung cancer. BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State ofNorth Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this second day of July in the year of our Lord two thousand and nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.
