RAYMOND WILLIAMS ENFORCEMENT DIVISION EEN.O:RANDU!vl TO : Hr . rrom Lambeth, Administrative Assistant to the Governor, State Capitol, Raleigh , North Carolina SUBJECT: CORE Report by Captain A. v. :velch, State Highway Patrol , Greensboro , North Carolina, Saturday P oM. , 17 November On Saturday, 17 November 1962 , a gang of CORE representatives attempted to integrate the Mayfair and S & W Cafeterias in Greensboro , North Carolina . There were approximately twenty-five in each Cafeteria. At the S & W, the participants came and stood in line . Mr . Bentz, the Eanager, went up to each one and said , HI am Hr . Bentz . ·itle do not solicit your business and we do not serve colored people; this is private property and I am asking you to leave . If you do not leave , you will be trespassing and we will call the police ! ' The representatives refused to leave, and Mr . Bentz called the police . At the Mayfair Cafeteria, about the same number came in . Seven or eight stood in line ; the balanc e sat down at tables. ~he management , Kr . Boyd Morris , the owner, went to them and told them they would not be served and requested them to leave , saying they were on private property . rle advised if they did not leave, that he Hould call the police and have them arrested . Mr . Morris called the police and they took fifty-three to the Police Station . 0arrants were issued for forty - eight persons ; the others were juveniles . Among these was a Chinese boy, who has been arrested a number of times, who said he is an employee of CORE . The other subjects were colored students of A & P and Bennett College . There was a sprinkling of Dudley High Schools students . These were all juveniles . They were all recognized to come to court . No one was put in jail . NOV 2 0 1962 ~ A~rfv :kb DAVID T.
