september 5 1777 the number 392 north-carolina gazette with the lateft advices foreign and domestic semper pro libertate et bono publico boston july 24 by an exprefs arrived here laft friday night from man chefter in the state of vermont which he left on tuef tlay the 15th in-tan we learn that the enemy were then in po*_t.ftion of and fortifying cattle town en the han.pfh.ire grants fo called and cutting a road through towards south bay ir order to get to fort ann ; that there had be.n a battle at husbarton between a bodv of our troops under the command of colonel ebenezer frar.tis ofthe maffachufetts state and co kale of the ham hirc state and abojt 2000 of ths enemy when our people retreated being overpowered by ntmbcrs ; that the lofs on our fide was reportca to be about 150 killed and mi.png amor the former were the above-mentioned colonels francis and hale ; that there hr.d bee a fecond engagement at or near fort ann between no tber boiy of our troops under the cog.jj.knd of colonel vv'arcer and about ijoocf the enemy when they were repulfed with confiderable lofs ; that it was reported and beloved that the c j-nemy in both actions had between 4 and 500 killed and noft pare had a greater number wounded arid th^t major s^ene l(for whom mr lovcl was exchanged had got to l'keerifboroigh kvith a number of tories foidier and was determined to ortify and defend that place to the laft extremity being otrer d what attiltance he required from the humane general howe xx&rmsofa letter from a gentleman mt paris dated may 1 1777 all iiurcpe i on our hdc of the queftion as far as appiiyfe nd good wi«hes can carry them thofe who live under arbi trary power do neve-thuds approve of liberty and wiih fir ir ih-.y ahnoft defpair of recovering it in europe they read the rr ar.flation of our feparate colony confti rations with rapture and there are fuch numbers every where who t !
