The order for listing of Council of State Departments has traditionally been the order they are listed in the Constitution of North Carolina. This is how you will find them in this directory. The administrative heads, called "Secretaries" of other executive departments are appointed by the governor, serving at his pleasure. The members of the Council of State and the Department secretaries collectively form an advisory body to the governor called "The Executive Cabinet." The Department of Community Colleges is an exception in that its head is not a member of the Executive Cabinet. NOTE
:
Members of the Council of State are constitutional officers elected
by the citizens of North Carolina every four years. The order for listing of
Council of State Departments has traditionally been the order they are listed
in the Constitution of North Carolina. This is how you will find them in this
directory. The administrative heads, called "Secretaries" of other executive
departments are appointed by the governor, serving at his pleasure. The members
of the Council of State and the Department secretaries collectively form an
advisory body to the governor called "The Executive Cabinet." The Department
of Community Colleges is an exception in that its head is not a member of the
Executive Cabinet.
