Eating a lot of fat raises your blood cholesterol number. If your blood cholesterol number is too high, you may have a heart attack or a stroke. What is fat? Fat is a greasy substance that doesn’t mix ( dissolve in) with water. Pound for pound, fats have more calories than any other food. Fats may be solid at room temperature like beef fat, shortening, and butter or liquid like corn and soybean oils. What foods have fat in them? There is fat in most foods. It is found often in meat, dairy products, desserts, and snacks. You can see some fats, like butter and meat fat. But some fats cannot be seen, like the fat in nuts, cheese, and hot dogs. This is called hidden fat because you are not as aware that it is in your food. Most fruits and vegetables have no fat. You see the fat in: Fats are hidden in: butter whole milk and whole milk products margarine many processed foods oil many prepared foods shortening snack foods cream sauces and gravies salad dressing hot dogs and cold cuts mayonnaise egg yolks meat drippings cheeses marbled parts of meat seeds bacon nuts meat trimming olives avocados EAT RIGHT F O R L I F E
