Commenting on their relationship with CPCC, Jeanne Regan said: “Thank you for the outstanding job you are doing in assisting us in providing our Montagnard friends the greatest gift of all–education.” CPCC is privileged to be of assistance; the “thank you” goes to the Regans for their phenomenal concern and generosity. Time Warner Cable Gift Supports Students and Services In the spring of 2006, Time Warner Cable of Charlotte made a generous commitment to provide services, equipment, and financial support to CPCC. In return for this commitment, the student commons area of the Overcash Academic and Performing Arts Center will be named for Time Warner Cable. Time Warner President Mike Munley said, “We are proud to be investing not only in Central Piedmont Community College, but in our future. By providing our technology to the College, we are taking an active role in assisting and supporting tomorrow’s leaders.” Cato and Lea Receive Awards Congratulations to Wayland Cato, Jr. and to Brenda Lea for receiving well-deserved awards at the Charlotte Chapter - Association of Fundraising Professionals’ annual Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon on November 1, 2005. Mr. Cato, for whom Central Piedmont Community College’s Cato Campus was dedicated in 2005, was named “Outstanding Philanthropist.” Ms. Lea, Executive Director of Development, CPCC Foundation, was named “Outstanding Professional Fundraising Executive.” Picture: Mr. Cato Wayland H. She also knew she wanted to attend a school that was convenient and close to home. That’s why she chose CPCC. Today, she has experienced firsthand more than just the benefit of convenience at CPCC. “At CPCC, I was introduced to instructors and counselors who truly care,” explains Rebka. “They helped me find the perfect career path and introduced me to a wealth of resources at the College.” Rebka is pursuing an Associate’s degree in physical therapy and plans to transfer to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. “The instructors and counselors at CPCC took time for me and made me feel special. Currently, she serves as Director of International Outreach and is instrumental in developing strategic plans for increasing educational opportunities for the rapidly growing international community. She develops educational programming which recognizes and is sensitive to the cultural and linguistic diversity in the Charlotte region. Gilda has directed and developed ESL program initiatives with a focus on workforce development and distance learning that have been nationally recognized. This year, Gilda was named the Southern regional winner for the Faculty Member of the Year Award by the Association of Community College Trustees. She was also appointed to the Governor’s Advisory Council on Hispanic/Latino Affairs. Gilda has provided strong leadership in the College’s effort to transition multicultural/multilingual students into the College and the community. Some of the various projects initiated by Gilda’s team include the following: • Career Ladders program for English Language Learners, which provides job training to enter the Charlotte workforce. The step-by-step program prepares multilingual learners to succeed in postsecondary educa-tion and training that can lead to entry-level positions in high-demand industries. • Civic Engagement program, which offers students a series of short multimedia workshops that provides them with access to civic information, training opportunities, and general cultural information. • Partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) –the College-to-Career program is a five-week career exploration and skills preparation course that targets Spanish-speaking CMS graduates who need extra support before entering postsecondary education. “We are extremely proud of Gilda Rubio-Festa and her contributions to the College,” states Dr. Tony Zeiss, President of Central Piedmont Community College. “Gilda is a highly motivated and dedicated faculty member who is extremely passionate about the work she does. As a result of her innovative ideas and her passion for her work, the ESL program at CPCC has become a national model.” Gilda Rubio-Festa Ms. Susie Atwill Mr. Rick Atwill, Jr. Mr. Allen Bailey Mrs. Carrie C. A distinguished North Carolina State legislator during the 1950s, Mr. O’Herron introduced the first legislation to found North Carolina community colleges. Mr. O’Herron was the father of Patty Norman, co-chair of the College’s Creating Opportunities campaign, and father-in-law of campaign co-chair and Foundation Board President Tommy Norman. Edward “Ed” O’Herron, Jr. Memorial Gifts Honor Gifts Memorial and honor gifts allow donors to remember family and friends important to us. Some CPCC friends make a provision in their will for gifts to be made to the College at their death, or their families make the request. Others receive gifts in their honor while they are living–for their birthdays, anniversaries or even Christmas. Allison Scholarship supports full-time students enrolled in CPCC’s Paralegal Technology Program. The scholarship was established this year by CPCC Foundation Board member Judy Allison and her husband, Jim, of the law firm Johnston Allison & Hord. Awards are based on both academic achievement and financial need. Some 60 students graduate from the College’s Paralegal Program each year. In explaining why they created the scholarship, Jim said: “Paralegals are critically important to the successful operation of a law firm. CPCC provides a quality paralegal education pro-gram and thoroughly prepares paralegals to succeed in their profession. Judy and I are proud to sponsor a scholarship fund to support such an outstanding program.” On her service and support of the College, Judy commented: “CPCC has a tremendous impact on our community and serves a vital role in educating our citizens. I’m committed to its mission and honored to serve on the CPCC Foundation’s Board.” Powell Majors Honored The R. Powell Majors Bookstore, relocated to the College’s Professional Development Building on Central Campus, was dedicated on October 18, 2005. The Majors Bookstore honors Mr. Majors and recognizes his support of Central Piedmont Community College, his service as Executive Director of the CPCC Foundation 1971–1990, and his commitment to education in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. In addition, the Charlotte Rotary Club and the CPCC Foundation together launched a Powell Majors Scholarship Endowment Fund in the spring of 2006 to acknowledge Powell’s 100th birthday on December 12, 2006. Friends who would like to make a contribution may send a gift to: Majors Scholarship, CPCC Foundation, PO Box 35009, Charlotte, NC 28235 or call 704.330.6869. 16 Judith N. and James W. Allison Powell and Dot Majors with Dr. Tony Zeiss cut the ribbon at the new R. Powell Majors Bookstore 17 Mike Munley Carl and Jeanne Regan Carl and Jeanne Regan Assist Montagnards Montagnards or “Mountain People” refers to the name given to indigenous tribes of the central highlands of Vietnam. They fought alongside U.S. Special Forces during the Vietnam War, and many Montagnards have come to this country since the war’s end. Carl Regan, a former Green Beret, and his wife, Jeanne, have established a Save the Montagnard Scholarship Fund at CPCC and a number of other colleges. By doing so, they seek to repay the Montagnards for their support of U. S. troops. The scholarship provides full tuition for full-and part-time Montagnard students. Carrie C. Hardin CPCC Loses Friend and Supporter We mourn the passing of Edward “Ed” O’Herron, Jr. He and his wife, Margaret “Dosty” O’Herron, established the first Faculty Endowment at CPCC in 1993 to honor excellence in teaching.
