Mission Statement To inspire a culture of sustainability within DENR by promoting environmentally‐ responsible actions. Goals I. Develop and Facilitate Implementation of DENR Sustainability Program Policies II. Initiate, Coordinate and Promote DENR‐ wide Environmentally Sustainable Activities III. Enhance Employee Sustainability Awareness IV. Assess and Report Sustainability Activities Summary of Activities and Accomplishments 2009 The Sustainability Team is comprised of one representative from each of the divisions and major offices within DENR. In 2009, the team reported to Chief Deputy Secretary Manly Wilder. The team met in January and elected team officers. Team members were responsible for gathering, sharing and developing information on sustainability, resources and ideas for their division. Additionally, team members served as division representatives in the implementation of DENR‐ wide sustainability activities. Each team member was encouraged to serve on no more than two subcommittees during the year. Team members met monthly and focused on continued implementation of its strategic plan, which was used to identify activities for each of the 11 subcommittees. Promoting sustainable practices in existing DENR buildings, video conferencing, wider acceptance for teleworking and green living policy recommendations were identified as priority goals. From drafting green living policies to recycling denim, the 2009 Sustainability Team accomplished a diverse list of projects. This report contains the significant activities and accomplishments for the year. In 2010, the team will revise its strategic plan as needed. This living document will again serve as the guide for determining the year’s priority activities. Policy development, promoting sustainable activities, increasing employee awareness and assessing accomplishments will continue as priorities. The team will also assist DENR in meeting and exceeding the department’s strategic goals in 2010. I. DENR Sustainability Program Policy Activities Green Employee Living Policy ( Chair: Eric Ellis) Two draft policies were created for departmental review: Sustainable Living and Green Square Complex Policies. The Sustainable Living Policy provides guidelines that are applicable to all DENR facilities, while the Green Square Complex Policies are specific to this new construction. With assistance from the Strategic Planning and Reporting subcommittee, plans were developed to conduct pre‐ and post‐ employee surveys to establish baseline behaviors and assess changes. Videoconferencing/ Communication ( Chair: John Seymour) In addition to minutes from each meeting, highlights were distributed as “ mini‐ minutes” to all team members in order to better communicate pertinent information to all divisionsThe subcommittee continued to work wi h Gary Hunt ( Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance) on teleconferencing opportunities for all DENR agencies. Teleconferencing with Adobe “ Pro‐ Connect” is now available through state contract. Secretary John Seymour also provided information to help develop the DENR Strategic Energy Plan and carbon footprint registry The team continued to use teleconferencing and the Aquarium Division’s videoconferencing facilities for meetings throughout th year. DENR Sustainability Team Participation ( Secretary: John Seymour) Each division appointed a Sustainability Team representative in January to serve a 12‐ month term. Team members were asked to attend monthly meetings, participate in up to two subcommittees, and communicate DENR sustainability messages and resources to their division. Team members were encouraged to include participation on the Sustainability Team on their annual performance management work lan. Of the 30 divisions and programs represented on the Team, an average of 63 percent participated in monthly meetings. Accomplishments • Created draft Sustainable Living and Green Square Complex Policies • Bethany Goodwin was co‐ presenter for “ Mobility and Teleworking: Effective Business Policies and Practices” • 465 DENR employees participated in the Triangle Transit Authority alternative commute survey • TTA selected DENR for pilot survey on “ Commuter Consultations” • 63 percent of divisions participated in monthly team meetings • Successfully held team meetings via video and teleconference • Worked with DPPEA to determine departmental teleconferencing needs • Provided information for development of DENR Strategic Energy Plan and carbon footprint registry • Assisted TTA with Smart Commute Challenge and hosted three pledge events • Circulated petition to reroute southbound CAT bus route to 2728 Capital Best Work Places Smart Commute ( Chairs: Anne Galamb and Bethany Goodwin) Subcommittee chair Bethany Goodwin was a co‐ presenter at the N. C. Digital Government Summit ( Sept. 2‐ 3, 2009) on “ Mobility and Teleworking: Effective Business Policies and Practices,” regarding the success of the DENR teleworking policy. In February, 465 DENR employees participated in the Triangle Transit Authority alternative commute survey. While 83 percent of respondents commuted alone, 60 percent were interested in carpooling opportunities. Additionally 15 percent of respondents took advantage of teleworking and 60 percent were interested in this alternative. The TTA chose DENR for a pilot survey of 200 selected Archdale employees to conduct “ Commuter Consultations” ( 10‐ 15 minute personalized sessions for alternative transportation planning). Each participant was provided with an individual packet of information detailing specific commuting options. A Ride Share link was created on the Smart Commute Web site for DENR employees. Onsite pledge drives were conducted at three locations for the TTA Smart Commute Challenge in May. Information on Triangle Transit van pool options for Durham, Orange and Wake counties was distributed to eligible employees. The subcommittee assisted with the distribution of the “ Go Pass” commuting subsidy for DENR employees. In September, two “ Try Transit” events were held in order to distribute information about Capital Area Transit bus routes. Additionally, the subcommittee circulated a petition to reroute the southbound CAT route to allow pick‐ up on the east side of Capital Boulevard near 2728 Capital. More than 100 signatures were collected from state employees and findings were presented to the Raleigh Transit Authority in ctober. II. DENRwide Environmentally Sustainable Activities Accomplishments • DENR 2009 Sustainability Award winners: Group Project Award 1st The Diversity Council 2nd The E2 Workgroup Individual Large Project Award 1st John McDonald, N. Zoo 2nd Sushma Masemore, Air Quality 2nd Janine Nicholson, Office of Conservation & Community Affairs Individual Small Project Award 1st Brian Conrad, Marine Fisheries 2nd Brandon Whitesell, Public Affairs • More than 2,500 pounds of reading material were shared during book exchange events • 210 denim pieces were collect to make insulation for Habitat for Humanity homes • Team member David Hance submitted the winning suggestion on how to use the recycled pink marble for Green Square Sustainability Award Program ( Chair: Marty Wiggins) Each year the team solicits nominations for sustainability awards in three categories: Group Project, Individual Large Project and Individual Small Project. In 2009, 24 nominations were received, representing 15 DENR divisions or facilities. Awards were judged by: David Knight ( Assistant DENR Secretary), Tracy Dixon ( North Carolina State University Sustainability Office) and Chuck Sathrum ( State Energy Office). Awards were presented by Secretary Dee Freeman at the January 2010 Senior Managers Meeting. DENR Recycling Efforts ( Chairs: Lori Glaum and Lindy Allen) Two book exchanges were conducted in 2009. More than 100 employees participated in the exchange at 2728 Capital and approximately 1,500 pounds of books changed hands. Approximately 200 employees participated in the exchange at the Archdale Building, where an estimated 800 books were exchanged. Leftover books from both events were donated to local charity programs. The first ever “ Denim Drive” was conducted to collect material that is used to make insulation for Habitat for Humanity homes. DENR employees contributed 210 pieces of denim. The subcommittee also assisted with educating DENR employees about the new landfill restrictions that took effect on October 1. Green Square Building Design Project ( Chairs: Jill Pafford and Victoria Tillotson) The team continued to monitor the plans and progress of Green Square. Team member David Hance submitted the winning idea on how to best use some of the recycled pink marble from the demolition to create a compass rose geodetic survey marker in the building lobby. III. Employee Sustainability Awareness Activities Accomplishments • Continued making revisions and updates on the DENR Sustainability portal • Google Analytics is now being used to monitor portal traffic • Promoted the use of eco‐ font for printing • Distributed monthly GreenerDENR newsletter to all DENR employees • Drafted employee training materials to promote departmental sustainable initiatives • Five DENR agencies actively participated in Earth Day at the Museum of Natural Sciences • Provided information to approximately 13,000 Earth Day event attendees Team Web Site ( Chair: Brandon Whitesell) Revisions and updates continued on the DENR Sustainability portal http:// portal. ncdenr. org/ web/ sustainability. Eco‐ font for printing, informational posters and the GreenerDENR articles can be viewed and downloaded. DENR employees can also search the database of team members. Additionally, the team’s archived documents and handouts were uploaded for permanent storage on the portal. Google Analytics is now being used to monitor portal traffic. Greener DENR ( Chair: Chris Frazier) Through distribution of the monthly GreenerDENR newsletter, all DENR employees received information on a wide range of sustainability topics. Current and archived articles are posted on the Sustainability Team’s portal. Employee Training and Education ( Chair: Lori Brinn) The subcommittee drafted a “ Top 10 Ways to be Sustainable” presentation and DENR University module for new employee trainings that focuses on departmental sustainability initiatives. Due to budget constraints, the subcommittee was unable to purchase educational banners and other promotional items this year. Earth Day ( Chair: MT Fore) The team participated in the Earth Day celebration hosted by the Museum of Natural Sciences. Several DENR agencies participated, including Forest Resources, Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance, Albemarle‐ Pamlico National Estuary Program, Division of Water Quality and the Ecosystem Enhancement Program. DENR agencies were encouraged to minimize paper handouts. Informational signs for each division, and the event banner ( 100 percent recycled polypropylene) created in 2008 were reused. Other events were held at the N. C. Zoo and Aquariums. IV. Assessing and Reporting Sustainability Activities Strategic Planning and Reporting ( Chair: Joanne Harcke) The team’s first strategic plan was reviewed and approved in 2009. The team’s mission, vision, and goals and objectives were used to identify activities for each of the 11 subcommittees. The Strategic Planning and Reporting subcommittee assisted others to develop metrics for measuring and reporting accomplishme ts. Additionally, the subcommittee was responsible for creating and distributing the team’s annual report. Budget ( Treasurer: Pat Powell) The team’s annual budget ($ 10,000) included funds for awards, office supplies, postage/ conference calls, printing/ binding/ duplicating, and educational supplies for instruction and training. A five percent reversion was required in FY09‐ 10, reducing the team’s budget to $ 9,500. Input to the DENR Strategic Plan Goals ( Contact: Jill Pafford) The team effectively contributed to several of the goals in DENR’s 2009‐ 2013 Strategic Plan. By continued monitoring of green design features of the Green Square project and development of green living policy recommend tions, the team worked to help plan a smooth transition. In addition, the team’s efforts through GreenerDENR and Earth Day contributed to increased environmental awareness among employees and our ustomers. The team looks forward to continuing to assist DENR in meeting and exceeding the strategic goals in these areas in 2010. Accomplishments • Reconfirmed the first Sustainability Team Strategic Plan, February 2009 • Prioritized objectives and formed 11 subcommittees to accomplish activities • Published the Team’s second Annual Report detailing the year’s accomplishments • Contributed to the DENR accomplishments in several strategic plan goals

In addition, the team’s efforts through GreenerDENR and Earth Day contributed to increased environmental awareness among employees and our ustomers. The team looks forward to continuing to assist DENR in meeting and exceeding the strategic goals in these areas in 2010. Accomplishments • Reconfirmed the first Sustainability Team Strategic Plan, February 2009 • Prioritized objectives and formed 11 subcommittees to accomplish activities • Published the Team’s second Annual Report detailing the year’s accomplishments • Contributed to the DENR accomplishments in several strategic plan goals |
