The majority of the tabulations are by place of residence; selected items are given by place of occurrence. The first annual report appeared in 1914. Subsequent reports have been published annually since that time v^ith the exception for the years 1918 and 1919. Certificates of births, deaths, and stillbirths occurring in 1947 that v^^ere filed in 1947 and the first three months of 1948 are included in this report. It is estimated that vital events occur-ring in 1947 but reported after the first three months of 1948 will comprise slightly less than tv^o per cent of the total 1947 events. Population Population estimates prepared by any method during the past few years must be considered as being less accurate than those for more stable times, and the 1947 estimates must be assumed to be less accurate than those for 1946 since an additional year has passed since the 1940 Census. For this reason the only popu-lation figures supplied in the 1947 annual report are for the state and the counties with age and sex estimates omitted. The population of North Carolina as of July 1, 1947 was 3,718,000. This estimate excluded armed forces overseas and was supplied by the U. S. Census Bureau. The mid-year estimate in 1946 was 3,640,645. The increase in 1947 over 1946, there-fore, amounted to 77,355 persons. The natural increase (excess of births over deaths) was 81,357, the largest natural increase in the history of the State for the second consecutive year. Evidently the State lost approximately 4,000 people by migra-tion. We have attempted to estimate county populations by color in Table I based on the percentage distributions of the Census in 1940. The per cent of the State's population comprised by each county in 1940 was applied to the total estimate for the State in 1947 in order to obtain such county population totals. Generally such estimates will be reasonably accurate; however. 8 Annual Report Nineteen Forty-seven it should be kept in mind that some counties have increased at a faster rate than the state as a whole while the rate of in-crease in others may have been less rapid. Natality There were 111,282 live births reported in 1947 occurring to mothers who were residents of the State. For the second straight year this represented an all-time high for births, sur-passing by 11,195 the previous high year in 1946 which saw 100,087 births recorded. The crude birth rate was 29.9 births per 1,000 population, the highest rate since 1924. There were 2,748 resident stillbirths reported resulting in a rate of 24.7 stillbirths per 1,000 live births. If stillbirths were considered as a single cause of death, they would rank fourth between cancer and nephritis as a leading cause of death. MortaZity There were 29,925 deaths recorded in 1947. The crude death rate was 8.0 deaths per 1,000 population. Diseases of the heart, as they have for the last 27 years, were responsible for more deaths than any other cause of death, accounting for 25% of all deaths for the year. The last year that any other cause of death outranked diseases of the heart was in 1920 and tubercu-losis was the cause. Infant and Maternal Mortality There were 3,920 infant deaths and 202 maternal deaths re-ported. The resultant infant and maternal deaths per 1,000 live births were 35.2 and 1.8, respectively. These rates were the lowest since North Carolina became a Registration State in 1917. In 1918, there was an all-time high rate of 101.8 infant deaths per 1,000 live births. The previous high year for mater-nal deaths was also in 1918 when there were 10.8 maternal deaths per 1,000 live births. The infant mortality rate at present is only one-third of what it was thirty years ago, while the ma-ternal death rate now is only one-sixth as high as at that time. Rates All rates shown in this report are crude rates unless other-wise specified. Such rates have not been adjusted for differences North Carolina Bureau of Vital Statistics 9 in the age, sex, color, rural or urban distribution of the popula-tion or for under-registration or late reporting. Such factors, plus the knowledge that population figures are estimated, should be kept in mind when comparing two different areas or time periods. Changes in This Report Each year requests for varying types of vital statistics in-formation indicate the necessity for preparing additional tabu-lations. Every effort has been made to include those tabulations most frequently called for. In most cases information previously given in an omitted table may be obtained by request. The table numbers have been changed and titles have been reworded. Crude rates for cities have been omitted due to lack of reliable city population data. The following 1946 tables have been omitted: 1. Estimated Population for North Carolina by Age, Color, and Sex, (Table I). 2. Ten Leading Causes of Death of Residents by Five-Year Intervals, With Crude Rates per 100,000 Population (Table XIV). Tables appearing in this report for the first time: 1. Deaths from Selected Causes in North Carolina, 1922-1947 (Table IX). 2. Accidental Deaths by County of Occurrence, Color, and Sex, 1947 (Table XI). 10 Annual Eeport Nineteen Forty-seven Table I. — Estimated Population of North Carolina as op July 1, 1947 BY County and Color, Showing 1940 Census Percentage Distribution. INTRODUCTION
The thirty-second annual report of the Bureau of Vital Sta-tistics
presents tabular information regarding North Carorlina's
population, births, deaths, and stillbirths. The majority of the
tabulations are by place of residence; selected items are given
by place of occurrence.
The first annual report appeared in 1914. Subsequent reports
have been published annually since that time v^ith the exception
for the years 1918 and 1919.
Certificates of births, deaths, and stillbirths occurring in 1947
that v^^ere filed in 1947 and the first three months of 1948 are
included in this report. It is estimated that vital events occur-ring
in 1947 but reported after the first three months of 1948
will comprise slightly less than tv^o per cent of the total 1947
events.
Population
Population estimates prepared by any method during the past
few years must be considered as being less accurate than those
for more stable times, and the 1947 estimates must be assumed
to be less accurate than those for 1946 since an additional year
has passed since the 1940 Census. For this reason the only popu-lation
figures supplied in the 1947 annual report are for the
state and the counties with age and sex estimates omitted.
The population of North Carolina as of July 1, 1947 was
3,718,000. This estimate excluded armed forces overseas and
was supplied by the U. S. Census Bureau. The mid-year estimate
in 1946 was 3,640,645. The increase in 1947 over 1946, there-fore,
amounted to 77,355 persons. The natural increase (excess
of births over deaths) was 81,357, the largest natural increase
in the history of the State for the second consecutive year.
Evidently the State lost approximately 4,000 people by migra-tion.
We have attempted to estimate county populations by color
in Table I based on the percentage distributions of the Census
in 1940. The per cent of the State's population comprised by
each county in 1940 was applied to the total estimate for the
State in 1947 in order to obtain such county population totals.
Generally such estimates will be reasonably accurate; however.
8 Annual Report Nineteen Forty-seven
it should be kept in mind that some counties have increased at
a faster rate than the state as a whole while the rate of in-crease
in others may have been less rapid.
Natality
There were 111,282 live births reported in 1947 occurring
to mothers who were residents of the State. For the second
straight year this represented an all-time high for births, sur-passing
by 11,195 the previous high year in 1946 which saw
100,087 births recorded.
The crude birth rate was 29.9 births per 1,000 population,
the highest rate since 1924.
There were 2,748 resident stillbirths reported resulting in a
rate of 24.7 stillbirths per 1,000 live births. If stillbirths were
considered as a single cause of death, they would rank fourth
between cancer and nephritis as a leading cause of death.
MortaZity
There were 29,925 deaths recorded in 1947. The crude death
rate was 8.0 deaths per 1,000 population. Diseases of the heart,
as they have for the last 27 years, were responsible for more
deaths than any other cause of death, accounting for 25% of
all deaths for the year. The last year that any other cause of
death outranked diseases of the heart was in 1920 and tubercu-losis
was the cause.
Infant and Maternal Mortality
There were 3,920 infant deaths and 202 maternal deaths re-ported.
The resultant infant and maternal deaths per 1,000 live
births were 35.2 and 1.8, respectively. These rates were the
lowest since North Carolina became a Registration State in
1917. In 1918, there was an all-time high rate of 101.8 infant
deaths per 1,000 live births. The previous high year for mater-nal
deaths was also in 1918 when there were 10.8 maternal
deaths per 1,000 live births. The infant mortality rate at present
is only one-third of what it was thirty years ago, while the ma-ternal
death rate now is only one-sixth as high as at that time.
Rates
All rates shown in this report are crude rates unless other-wise
specified. Such rates have not been adjusted for differences
North Carolina Bureau of Vital Statistics 9
in the age, sex, color, rural or urban distribution of the popula-tion
or for under-registration or late reporting. Such factors,
plus the knowledge that population figures are estimated, should
be kept in mind when comparing two different areas or time
periods.
Changes in This Report
Each year requests for varying types of vital statistics in-formation
indicate the necessity for preparing additional tabu-lations.
Every effort has been made to include those tabulations
most frequently called for. In most cases information previously
given in an omitted table may be obtained by request.
The table numbers have been changed and titles have been
reworded. Crude rates for cities have been omitted due to lack
of reliable city population data.
The following 1946 tables have been omitted:
1. Estimated Population for North Carolina by Age, Color,
and Sex, (Table I).
2. Ten Leading Causes of Death of Residents by Five-Year
Intervals, With Crude Rates per 100,000 Population
(Table XIV).
Tables appearing in this report for the first time:
1. Deaths from Selected Causes in North Carolina, 1922-1947
(Table IX).
2. Accidental Deaths by County of Occurrence, Color, and
Sex, 1947 (Table XI).
