(By place of residence) 157 INTRODUCTION The thirty-first annual report of the Bureau of Vital Statistics presents information regarding North Carolina's population, births, and deaths. The majority of the tabulations are by place of residence; selected items are given by place of occurrence. The first annual report appeared in 1914, Publication of succeeding re-ports has taken place for all years since that date, with the exception of 1918 and 1919. Certificates for births and deaths occurring in 1946 that were filed in 1946 and the first three months of 1947 have been included in this report. It is estimated that approximately 98 per cent of the certificates that will ever be filed for 1946 vital events were received within this period. Population Population estimates prepared by any method during the past few years must be considered as being less accurate than those for more stable times; however, it is believed that the errors are not sufficiently great to inter-fere seriously with the use of these data for vital statistics purposes. The mid-year population of North Carolina, excluding armed forces over-seas, as estimated by the United States Bureau of the Census for 1946, was 3,640,645. The estimate for 1945 was 3,514,297. The increase in 1946, therefore, amounted to 126,348. Undoubtedly some of this increase was due to returning servicemen; however, the natural increase (excess of births over deaths) for 1946 was 71,717, which was the largest natural increase in the history of the state. In Table I is presented an estimate of the population of the state by age, color, and sex. The first step in the preparation of this estimate was the calculation of the per cent of the total United States population in each of these age, sex, and color groups based on the 1940 census. TTie same calcula-tion was then made for the years since 1940, based on the Census Bureau estimates of the population in these same groups. The per cent of North Carolina's population in each age, color, and sex group in the 1940 census was obtained next. It was assumed that the North Carolina percentages in these groups changed in the same way as the percentages for the nation. By applying these percentages to the Census Bureau's estimates of North Carolina's total population for each year, the totals in the various groups were obtained. Natality There were 100,087 live births reported in 1946 for residents of the state. This exceeded by 4,540 births the number reported in 1943, which was the highest annual total recorded prior to 1946. The crude birth rate for 1946 was 27.5 births per 1000 population as compared to 25.0 for 1945. Births occurring in North Carolina for residents and nonresidents totaled 101,178 for the year. There were 2,513 stillbirths reported in 1946 for residents of the state. The 6 North Carolina Bureau of Vital Statistics 1945 total was 2,248. The 1946 rate was 25.1 stillbirths per 1000 population while the rate for 1945 was 25.6. If stillbirths were considered as a single cause of death, they would rank fifth between cancer (4th) and pneumonia (6th) as a leading cause of death in this state. Mortality In 1946 there were 28,370 resident deaths recorded in the state. The crude death rate was 7.8 deaths per 1000 population. This compares favorably with the 1945 rate of 8.1. Diseases of the heart accounted for the largest number of deaths, amounting to 23 per cent of the total deaths from all causes. There has been an extensive change in the death rates for the various age groups since the recording of vital statistics began. These rates for the years 1920 and 1946 are as follows: Deaths per 1,000 Deaths per 1,000 Age Group Under 1 .... 1- 4 5-14 15-24 25-34 35-44 45-54 55-64 65-74 75 & over pop. in Age North Carolina Bureau of Vital Statistics 7 in 1945. The 1946 maternal mortality rate was 2.1 deaths per 1,000 live births as compared to 2.7 in 1945. It is encouraging to note that the infant mortality rate has been de-creased by approximately 53 per cent in the last twenty-five years, while the maternal mortality rate has decreased by 74 per cent. The 1922 rates were 79.5 infant deaths and 8.0 maternal deaths per 1,000 live births. Rates All rates used in this report are crude rates unlsss otherwise specified. Such rates are not adjusted for deviations in the age, sex, or color distribu-tion of the population or for under-registration and late reporting. Such factors, plus the knowledge that population figures are estimated, should be kept in mind when comparing two different areas or time periods. Changes in this Report An effort has been made to improve the usefulness of this report by re-vising certain tables previously presented, omitting others, and adding new material considered to be of more current interest. Information con-tained in the omitted tables can be supplied upon request. The table numbers have been changed and headings have been reword-ed. The population estimates for counties now include color and percentage distribution. Crude rates for citites in certain tables have been omitted due to lack of reliable city population data. The following 1945 tables have been ommitted: , 1. Death rates in each county from nine important causes, with estimat-ed population (Table IX). 2. Cases and deaths of reportable communicable diseases (Table X). 3. Death rates from ten important causes, with estimated population for each year, 1914-1945 (Table XI). The tables appearing in this report for the first time are: 1. Estimated population for North Carolina by age, color, and sex (Table I). 2. Ten leading causes of death of residents by age, color, and sex, three-year average, 1944-1946 (Table XIII). 3. Ten leading causes of death of residents by five-year intervals showing rank and rates, 1921-1946 (Table XIV). 4. Stillbirths by county, color, and sex, with rates per 1000 live births (Table XV). 5. Stillbirths of residents by age and color of mother, and by attendant (Table XVI).
