Newsleer of the North Carolina Board of Architecture August 2017 President’s Message Steve M. McClure, Public Member The last several months have brought many changes to the Board of Architecture. While we gained two new members, we bid farewell to Julie McLaurin, AIA who served the Board well for five years. Thanks Julie! The Board also elected new oficers during the annual meeng in July. It was at that meeng, that I was elected President. I am truly excited to help lead an incredible team of Board members. As a group, we will connue to execute on what has worked well in the past, but also look towards the future to ensure that the Board will connue to be an example for other licensing boards to follow. As I menoned above, Governor Roy Cooper has appointed two new members to the Board – Katherine Peele, FAIA as an architect member and Fred Dodson, Jr. as a public member. Katherine is an architect and Execuve Vice President of Pracce for LS3P. With ofices in Raleigh, Wilmington and Charloe, NC and Charleston, Columbia, Myrtle Beach and Greenville, SC, LS3P is one of the Carolina’s largest architectural firms. Ms. Peele joined the firm in 1988 and has served as a project architect, project manager, principal architect and Raleigh ofice managing principal, during her 29‐year career with the firm. Her primary focus has been the design of educaonal projects, from K‐12 schools to higher educaon facilies, including university student housing. In her current posion with LS3P, Katherine heads up professional services, business development and markeng for the firm. Katherine’s has served on numerous boards and commiees, including the North Carolina State Building Commission (chairperson,) Wake Educaon Partnership, NC State College of Design Board and the Educaon Commiee for the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce. She is a Fellow in the American Instute of Architects and is the recipient of the “Dietrick Medal” public service award from AIA North Carolina. She served as AIA North Carolina Chapter President in 2000. Fred Dodson, Jr. is chief operang oficer and execuve vice president of Charloe‐Mecklenburg Housing Partnership, Inc., where he manages the organizaon’s mulfamily real estate development financing acvies and corporate operaons. Evans, Execuve Director Based on questions frequently asked of the Board staff we have put together a short quiz to see how well you know the rules and laws that govern your practice of architecture in North Carolina. Below are a few questions based on the rules and laws. As a licensed professional – an architect – per the administrative code in North Carolina, you are charged with having knowledge of the existence of the Board rules and shall be deemed to be familiar with and have an understanding of their provisions. Each year when you renew your license to pracce architecture, you afirm that you have read the current architectural laws and rules. If you can score a 100%, we will send you a Board of Architecture Prize Pack, while supplies last. In order for your response to qualify, you must provide the correct answer and quote the rule or statute where the information is found. Mail your completed exam with your full name and license number to my attention at the Board of Architecture. If you are struggling with the answers it might be time to brush up on 21 NCAC 02. a.k.a. “the rules” and G. S. 83A a.k.a. “the laws”. 1. True or False: In order to protect the public health, safety and welfare, the Board can adopt rules that prohibit advertising. General Statute __________________________. 2. Mr. Dodson earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Appalachian State University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Tennessee College Of Law. Please join the Board members and staff in welcoming Ms. Peele and Mr. Dodson to the Board of Architecture. The medals were bestowed by 2016‐2017 President Krisne A. Harding, NCARB, AIA, at the organizaon’s 2017 Annual Business Meeng. Thank you both for your service.
