ENROLLMENT, LOSSES, MEMBERSHIP BY GRADES This tabulation—a summary of several tables—shows by grades for the State: the number of different children enrolled (code a), the number of children dropping out of school, the membership on last day of school and the percentage of enrollment which quit school during 1933-1934. There is a division of the figures for white and colored pupils in county and city systems. 36 TABLE VI. PROPORTION OF ENROLLMENT, LOSSES, MEMBERSHIP IN EACH GRADE With the figures of Table V as a basis for calculations, this tabulation shows in percentage for each grade its proportion of the total net enroll-ment, losses and membership (last day of school) during 1933-1934. 37 TABLE VII. PROMOTIONS BY GRADES This tabulation shows by grades for the State: the number of pupils doing a full year's work, the number doing a half year's work, the number doing less than half year's work and the percentage of membership pro-moted, using the first column for number of promotions. The sum of these three groups equals the membership of preceding table, thus accounting for all pupils on the roll at close of school. There is division of the figures for white and colored children in county and city systems. 38 TABLE VIII. RELATIVE ACCOMPLISHMENT OF PUPILS BY GRADES This tabulation uses the distribution of pupils according to work ac-complished and shows by grades the percentage of the total in each group. Children enrolled (code a) have been divided into four categories: (1) those dropping out of school, designated losses (column 2 of Table V) ; (2) those doing all that could be expected in their work—ordinarily called promotions (column 1 of Table VII) ; (3) those doing approximately half a year's work (column 2 of Table VII) ; (4) those remaining (column 3 of Table VII). In other words, this is an attempt to account in percentages for all different children enrolled, showing relatively what was accomplished by the schools. 39 H H < tf H X! H eo OS i-H . INSTRUCTIONAL PERSONNEL This table gives a distribution of instructional personnel for 1933-1934 by race and function. Teachers are also divided according to sex. The summary shows the number of teachers in elementary schools, in high schools, the number of principals and supervisors; then relates this number to the pupils of Table I. Average daily membership and average daily attendance are both used as measures of the teaching load. Summary of Table X. EXPENDITURES FOR GENERAL CONTROL This table shows administrative costs during 1933-1934 for all county and city administrative units and the average annual salaries of superin-tendents and clerical assistants. These salaries were determined by a division of the amounts paid (611 and 613) by the number of people em-ployed, as shown on Table X of Section I. The division of expenditures as between white and colored schools was based upon enrollment. Items Financial Statistics 129 TABLES VII AND VIII. EXPENDITURES FOR INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICE These two tables give by race for the county and city school systems of the State during 1933-1934: the salaries paid teachers in elementary schools, salaries paid teachers in high schools, salaries paid principals and supervisors, the cost of supplies, of vocational education and of all other items of instructional service. Table VII is devoted to the cost of instruc-tion in elementary schools; Table VIII gives information as to instructional costs in high schools. The summary of the two tables shows salaries of teachers and prin-cipals reduced to an average annual basis. The procedure was division of expenditures for salaries, as shown in these tables, by the personnel em-ployed, as set forth in Table X of Section I. Since the salaries of teachers of vocational education are coded under 626, these teachers were deducted before the calculations as to average salaries were made. TABLE II. ENROLLMENT (Code A+ D) BY TERM
This table shows by race for the rural (county) and city school systems
of the State during 1933-1934: the number of pupils (a+d) enrolled in
elementary schools with terms of 6 months, 7 months, 8 months and 9
months; the number of pupils in high schools with terms of 8 months and
9 months. With races combined there appears also: the total number of
pupils in schools which were taught less than 8 months; the number in
schools which were taught 8 months or longer; the total enrollment (code
a+d) in all schools; and the percentage of total which did not have term
of 8 months.
The summary gives these items for the State, the net enrollment (dupli-cates
excluded) and a series of percentage calculations.

TABLE V. ENROLLMENT, LOSSES, MEMBERSHIP BY GRADES
This tabulation—a summary of several tables—shows by grades for the
State: the number of different children enrolled (code a), the number of
children dropping out of school, the membership on last day of school and
the percentage of enrollment which quit school during 1933-1934. There is
a division of the figures for white and colored pupils in county and city
systems.
36
TABLE VI. PROPORTION OF ENROLLMENT, LOSSES,
MEMBERSHIP IN EACH GRADE
With the figures of Table V as a basis for calculations, this tabulation
shows in percentage for each grade its proportion of the total net enroll-ment,
losses and membership (last day of school) during 1933-1934.
37
TABLE VII. PROMOTIONS BY GRADES
This tabulation shows by grades for the State: the number of pupils
doing a full year's work, the number doing a half year's work, the number
doing less than half year's work and the percentage of membership pro-moted,
using the first column for number of promotions. The sum of these
three groups equals the membership of preceding table, thus accounting
for all pupils on the roll at close of school. There is division of the figures
for white and colored children in county and city systems.
38
TABLE VIII. RELATIVE ACCOMPLISHMENT OF PUPILS
BY GRADES
This tabulation uses the distribution of pupils according to work ac-complished
and shows by grades the percentage of the total in each group.
Children enrolled (code a) have been divided into four categories: (1)
those dropping out of school, designated losses (column 2 of Table V) ;
(2) those doing all that could be expected in their work—ordinarily called
promotions (column 1 of Table VII) ; (3) those doing approximately half a
year's work (column 2 of Table VII) ; (4) those remaining (column 3 of
Table VII). In other words, this is an attempt to account in percentages for
all different children enrolled, showing relatively what was accomplished
by the schools.

TABLE X. INSTRUCTIONAL PERSONNEL
This table gives a distribution of instructional personnel for 1933-1934
by race and function. Teachers are also divided according to sex.
The summary shows the number of teachers in elementary schools, in
high schools, the number of principals and supervisors; then relates this
number to the pupils of Table I. Average daily membership and average
daily attendance are both used as measures of the teaching load.
