Resource Capacity and Infrastructural Needs in NC BSN and Higher Degree Programs December, 2003 North Carolina Center for Nursing Page 12 Attrition Rate Admission Criteria Student Selection Criteria 6.7 Cumulative GPA 2.75 or greater, adequate verbal SAT scores, score on essay question posed on application packet. GPA, SAT verbal scores and essay scores are weighted and based on the formula, students are ranked using their cumulative score. The top 45 students are offered admission. 7.0 Complete prerequisite lower division courses: ENG 11 and 12, STAT 11 or 31, PSYCH 10, CHEM 11 AND 21 ( plus labs) or BIOCHEM 7 and 8, BIO 11 ( plus labs), BIO 45 ( anatomy & physiology), Physiology 92, Microbiology 55 or 51, 2 social science courses, Cultural Diversity Perspective, Western History pre- 1700 and Comparative History, Literature, Fine Arts, 9 - 11 credits in a foreign language, 2 phys ed courses. Minimum GPA of 2.0. 5 short essays and 2 or 3 academic or professional references. Admissions committee reviews each applicant. Decisions are based on quality of cumulative GPA, science GPA, more recent GPA, essay content, and professional references. Our current criteria requires a 2.0 cumulative GPA. However, we seldom admit students with less than a 2.5 cumulative GPA. 10.2 Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.2; completion of general education requirements; minimum grade of C in biology, chemistry and college algebra or equivalent. Rank on highest GPA; those who repeat science courses lose points 16.7 50% for cumulative GPA, 50% for science GPA, extra points for previous BS or MS degree. Students are ranked according to score obtained for the combined scores of cumulative GPA and science GPA 21.6 GPA = 2.5; health form; CPR; Hep B series, etc. Completion of 4 science courses: 2 semesters of anatomy & physiology, 1 semester biochemistry, and 1 semester microbiology. Completion of psych, sociology, 2 English courses, and college algebra. Those with the highest GPA are admitted first. 29.6 Since admission occurs in the 1st semester, Junior year for the upper division that ( sic?) is discussed. Completion of all prerequisite courses with a GPA of 2.6. Complete review of transcripts. Currently examining admission to include points such as transfer credits, where pre- requisite courses were taken ( university or community college). 30.8 Cumulative GPA of 2.5 and also a GPA of 2.5 in the required Math and Natural sciences: biology 1610, 1620, 3200; chemistry 1500; science odyssey 1220; and math 1070 or 1100. A GPA of 2.0 in math and the natural sciences is acceptable is all grades are C or above and none of these courses are repeated. Completion of all nursing prerequisite courses: math 1070 or 1100, chemistry 1500, bio 1610 - anatomy & Physiology I, bio 1620 - anatomy & physiology II, Microbiology, Food 220, concepts of profession We choose the academically strongest students first. If competing students are evenly matched academically, we choose those that bring diversity into the profession. Do you ever admit students into the prelicensure BSN program who do not meet the selection criteria described above? No 11 ( 84.6%) Yes 1 ( 7.7%) Missing 1 ( 7.7%) - if yes, under what circumstances? • Selection is based on applicant's qualifications, intellectual curiosity, potential for professional growth, and contribution to the profession. Exceptions to any of the admission requirements will be considered on an individual basis. Have admitted ( rarely) students with undergraduate GPA of less than 3.0.
