Fall/Winter 2017 UPDATE NC State Publicaons Clearinghouse Welcome Krista! Krista Sorenson joined the State Library as Digital Projects Librarian in July 2017. In this capacity, she checks in new digital state publications; digitizes publications suggested by state agencies, the public, and Clearinghouse staff; and participates on the web archiving team. She also assists with the state library’s digital documents workflow review and formation of new file naming conventions. Krista’s previous position was in the Local Government Records Office at the Mississippi Department of Archives & History. There she helped inventory local government records, provided training in records management, and assisted with outreach events around the state of Mississippi. Krista received her M.S. in Library and Information Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in May 2014, her M.A. in Public History from North Carolina State University in May 2013, and her B.A. in History from Butler University in May 2011. Re-imagining digital serials The Government & Heritage Library has created a working group to look at how we work with digital serials. This group will investigate a new approach for digital serials. The team will explore: 1. Moving away from the current approach to organizing serials, where there may be more than 200 issues (children) attached to a descriptive record (parent). For an example see the record for NC Weather & Crops - https://goo.gl/QJ38az 2. Making serials manageable for the long-term, which includes planning for a move to a new content management system in the future. 3. Optimizing the usability and functionality of the current content management system. 4. Satisfying standards and guidelines, including preservation standards like OAIS. The work group has two goals: Short term goal: Figure out the best way to present serials for easy access by users, and streamline the behind the scenes processing of serials. Long term goal: By January 2018 recommend a new approach to serial processing and management in CONTENTdm and provide next steps for implementation of the proposal. In conjunction with an NCLA presentation, GHL staff created a new LibGuide featuring government and legal information, as well as other topics. http://statelibrary.ncdcr.libguides.com/EverythingNC #EverythingNC LibGuide DMVA resource guide: for veterans, active military and their families From the NC Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, this resource contains information on VA benefits, healthcare, education, housing and more. Tobacco checkbox: a potential tool for measuring tobacco-related mortality In 2014 North Carolina implemented the revised U.S. Standard Death Certificate, which indicates whether tobacco use contributed to a death. The report examines the data from the tobacco checkbox for adult resident deaths occurring during 2014-2015. Trial judge’s perceptions of North Carolina’s Office of Indigent Defense Services: a report on survey results UNC School of Government surveyed Superior Court and District Court judges about their view of the legal services provided to defendants who cannot afford to hire a lawyer. The report discusses the results of the survey. How beneficial is agritourism? : North Carolina farmers and residents respond Agritourism has been growing in the last decade and a half.
