All school systems and schools have code numbers. A list of code numbers for school systems is on page 213. A handy reference guide to school system phone numbers is located on the inside front cover. School system code numbers are also included. If you know the name of a school but do not know its location, see page 215, the Alphabetical Index ofPublic Schools. This index includes the code number and telephone number of all public schools in this state. The first three digits of the code number indicate the school system. For example, 110-304 A C REYNOLDS HIGH 704- 298-2500 —To find the school system for the 110 code, refer to the code list on page 213. This is the code for Buncombe County. To find the principal's name and other information about this school, turn to the listing for Buncombe County and look for this code in the list of schools. Local board of education attorneys are listed under the names of the board members in the Alphabetical List of School Units by Counties. Their addresses are included, but call the central office of the school system for phone numbers. If you need the address of a private or home school, see the listing for the Office ofNon-Public Schools in the Special Schools' section, page 238. STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION Dist. Foreword
The North Carolina Education Directory is prepared and distributed
annually by the Department of Public Instruction's Division of
Communications and Information as a service to educators and
others interested in public education. The directory provides infor-mation
on the State Board of Education, the state education depart-ment,
a number of educational associations, individual school
systems and all public elementary and secondary schools in the
state.
We appreciate the valuable assistance from school superintendents
and others who supplied the information for this directory, and
hope it will be helpful to you.

Tips on Using the NC
Education Directory
If the school system is a city unit but you do not know which county
it is in, see County Locations of City School Units, page 59.
All school systems and schools have code numbers. A list of code
numbers for school systems is on page 213.
A handy reference guide to school system phone numbers is located
on the inside front cover. School system code numbers are also
included.
If you know the name of a school but do not know its location, see
page 215, the Alphabetical Index ofPublic Schools. This index
includes the code number and telephone number of all public schools
in this state. The first three digits of the code number indicate the
school system. For example, 110-304 A C REYNOLDS HIGH 704-
298-2500 —To find the school system for the 110 code, refer to the
code list on page 213. This is the code for Buncombe County. To find
the principal's name and other information about this school, turn to
the listing for Buncombe County and look for this code in the list of
schools.
Local board of education attorneys are listed under the names of the
board members in the Alphabetical List of School Units by Counties.
Their addresses are included, but call the central office of the school
system for phone numbers.
If you need the address of a private or home school, see the listing for
the Office ofNon-Public Schools in the Special Schools' section,
page 238.
