The Capitol at the Museum of History’s African American Cultural Celebration! 2/2/2018 February 2018 issue of The Signal https://mailchi.mp/311070d0c867/february2018issueofthesignal 2/6 Black History Month is a time to honor the achievements of African Americans who have made their mark throughout U.S. history. In North Carolina, African Americans such as Thomas Day, a master cabinetmaker and entrepreneur; and Hiram Rhoades Revels, who was born in North Carolina and became the first black member of the U.S. Congress, have made significant contributions to American arts, politics and finance. Kicking off this month, the Museum of History held the 17th Annual African American Cultural Celebration. Various museums, artisans, civic groups, musicians, and authors participated with displays and performances. The Capitol's display included a Freedom Hands craft. We asked visitors to think about the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery in the United States, and what freedoms others haven’t always been able to enjoy. Then they wrote the freedoms they are most thankful for on hands they traced and cut out. You can currently see the hands around the railing of the rotunda. Stop by and read some of our Freedom Hands! This exhibit was produced by Vance Birthplace State Historic Site, the North Carolina State Capitol, and photographer Dr. Brenda Scott. It will be free to view and will be on display in the Capitol until April 2018. Telling its story with objects, labels, and striking high resolution photographs, The Mountains Are Calling utilizes the scenery around the Vance Birthplace State Historic Site to explore life in the North Carolina mountains from c.1790 to c.1830. The photographs highlight aspects of daily life - from child rearing to wood working - and works to contextualize the Vance family and the enslaved people who lived and worked on the property.
