Continued UNC-TV Teams With Coastwatch What we are hearing from the sea. North Carolina Sea Grant www.ncseagrant.org Winter 2008 North Carolina Sea Grant and UNC-TV are teaming up to present Coastwatch on North Carolina Now. The first segment – focusing on the Rocky Branch stream restoration project – aired on Dec. 18 as part of UNC-TV’s nightly newsmagazine. A companion print story, “Cracking the Culvert: Urban Stream Restoration in North Carolina,” appeared in the holiday issue of Coastwatch, Sea Grant’s flagship publication. “UNC-TV and North Carolina Now are excited to be working in collaboration with North Carolina Sea Grant on this project. We are looking forward to bringing our viewers statewide more information on coastal science and an up-close look at important coastal research being conducted by Sea Grant and its partners,” said Shannon Vickery, UNC-TV executive producer for content. Three pilot segments are being funded by a grant from North Carolina State University’s Office of Extension, Engagement and Economic Development. The two future segments will focus on how fishermen locate fishes and the recent and relevant development of ocean observing technology. UNC-TV is working with Sea Grant to develop Web content on www.unctv.org/coastwatch, including downloadable and streaming versions of the segments, as well as material and links that show how the feature topics correlate to eighth-grade science standards, said Katie Mosher, Coastwatch managing editor. Marlene Stalls, eighth-grade science teacher at Manteo Middle School, is part of a team who identified coastal science topics for the series. “These stories will make a difference,” she said. “Students will see concepts revealed within the coastal region and the larger watersheds.” Stalls and North Carolina Sea Grant marine education specialist Terri Kirby Hathaway are developing discussion and research questions to accompany the three video segments and companion Coastwatch articles. These classroom applications, along with Web links for additional content and activity ideas, will be added to the Web site so that educators can use the video and print segments with their students. Although this project has been correlated with the N.C. eighth-grade science standard course of study, it is certainly appropriate for other grades and other subjects.
