For fourteen consecutive years, North Carolina has led the nation in the number of teachers who have achieved National Board certification. National Board Certified Teachers become leaders in the teaching profession, using what they learned through the National Board certification process to improve their classrooms and schools. According to Governor Beverly Perdue, “National Board Certified Teachers are essential to helping transform North Carolina’s schools.” Since 1997, the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching has been providing National Board Support Seminars that have served more than 5,000 candidates. Because many of these teachers have gone on to become candidate support providers through NCCAT, the state’s initial investment has been well leveraged, building a national reputation of dedication to quality public education for North Carolina. For the past five years, the Golden LEAF Foundation has provided major support for NCCAT’s National Board Support Seminars. “The Golden LEAF Foundation is please to support NCCAT’s work to increase the number of National Board Certified Teachers,” said Golden LEAF Foundation President Dan Gerlach. “This investment will help make North Carolina globally competitive by improving teaching and student learning.” Doyle Nicholson, a National Board Certified Teacher in mathematics at Mount Tabor High School, said, “I was so thankful for the help I received as a candidate at NCCAT that I wanted to give that help to others. I love working with adult learners and pushing their thinking to a new level.” In addition to being a candidate support provider at NCCAT, Nicholson also serves as a “virtual coach” for candidates through the Center for Teaching Quality. Martha Brown, a National Board Certified Teacher at Cameron Park Elementary School, wanted to give something back. “As soon as I was certified, I contacted Mary Kay Cooley at NCCAT,” she said. Cooley, assistant program director at NCCAT, has overseen NCCAT’s National Board support program since 2000. “By working TERRI CLARK continued on page 2 Tony Sapp, who teaches calculus and algebra at Charles D. Owen High School in Buncombe County, achieved National Board certification after attending an NCCAT National Board Support Seminar. Sapp, a frequent candidate support provider at NCCAT, said, “National Board certification is a powerful professional development tool. Initially it made my teaching better, but it also opened doors to new leadership roles.” NCCAT National Board partnerships bbuuiillddiinngg aa nneettwoorrkk ooff tteeaacchhiinngg eexxcceelllleennccee nccat www.nccat.org 2 • NCCAT Winter News Partnerships c. o.n t.inued from page 1 with other candidate support providers at NCCAT, my skills have grown significantly and now I lead pre-candidacy workshops for The Collaborative Project of the Public School Forum of North Carolina,” Brown said. In January 2010, NCCAT, the North Carolina Association of Educators, the Department of Public Instruction (DPI), and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards partnered to sponsor a training session for National Board Certified Teachers in the western region of the state for teachers seeking certification. Ultimately, NCCAT’s commitment to the National Board certification process is recognized well beyond our state. In 2000, when Dr. Beverly Melenyzer at California University of Pennsylvania wanted to create a program to promote National Board certification in her state, she reached out to NCCAT. With a grant from State Farm Insurance, Melenyzer and a colleague came to NCCAT to train with Mary Kay Cooley. “NCCAT was a strong mentor,” Melenyzer said. “We would not be where we are today in Pennsylvania without NCCAT.” Over the past decade, Melenyzer and Cooley have The 2004 study titled “Learning from Leadership: Investigating the Links to Improve Student Learning” found that principals have a positive impact on student achievement when they support learning communities in which teachers share a common focus on student learning and have opportunities for professional development. Through NCCAT’s Principal Scholars Initiative in partnership with DPI, public school principals are able to participate in an NCCAT seminar, enhancing their understanding of NCCAT’s instructional programming as well as reaping the benefits of the professional and intellectual development an NCCAT seminar provides. Recently, Principal Whitney Bisbing of Moyock Elementary School in Currituck County joined a group of teachers at NCCAT’s Ocracoke campus for the seminar “Women in Aviation: Pioneers of Courage.” The seminar explored the rich history of women in flight, the physics of aviation, and the metaphors of the challenge embodied in flight. “We learned so much about the women who have influenced the history of aviation in our country, both past and present heroines,” Bisbing said. During the week, Bisbing and her fellow educators performed a pre-flight check with a pilot, learned the geometry of navigation from a sailor, followed a compass Working together: Principals and teachers help students soar course, and met the all-female crew of a Navy MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter. “We learned science, history, social studies, math, and language arts all at the same time,” Bisbing said. Throughout the seminar, Bisbing kept a detailed blog that was followed by her elementary school audience. “I think it is very valuable for my students and teachers to see me as a teacher and a learner,” Bisbing said. conducted studies, one on the value of having National Board Certified Teachers serve as mentors to student teachers and another on the leadership styles of National Board Certified Teachers who became principals. “These principals understand what it takes to be an accomplished teacher,” Cooley said. This year, more than 6,000 teachers in North Carolina are working toward National Board certification. NCCAT’s National Board Support Seminars and the statewide network of candidate support providers will help ensure that our state’s teachers who strive to achieve this hard-won designation become better educators through the process. “I have taught for fifteen years,” said Jeannie Ransone, who teaches health at Sanderson High School. Ransone came to an NCCAT National Board Support Seminar in December 2008 and achieved certification in November 2009; she later returned to NCCAT in her new role as a candidate support provider. “Going through the process of National Board certification is one of the best things I have ever done. It has made me a better teacher and surrounded me with people who are motivated to be the best.” Principal Whitney Bisbing of Moyock Elementary School in Currituck County (center) with a team of Navy pilots (left to right): LCDR Shannon Martin, AW3 Soonja Tyrell, LT Chandra Newman, AW2 Haley Dunham, AWSC Lindaleah Johnson, LT Tara Feher. SANDRA BOWLING www.nccat.org February 2010 NCCAT Winter News • 3 With generous support from the North Carolina Automobile Deal-ers Association (NCADA), NCCAT developed the seminar “World in Motion: Careers and Creativity in the Car Industry.” The seminar brought together career and technical education, math, science, art, and history teachers to explore the history of automobile manufac-turing and design, examine the importance of motor sports to our region, and learn real-world applications in science, mathematics, and engineering. “By covering varied topics within the automobile industry, the seminar was able to show teachers firsthand how multiple disciplines support and are needed to grow this industry and thus the economy of our state,” said Dr. Jonathan Wade, the center fellow who designed and conducted the seminar. “With this knowledge, they can help their students connect what they are learning in class to a career path that excites and motivates them.” From the intricately programmed and choreographed movements of robots building cars for BMW to the carefully controlled processes used by Michelin to make safe tires, the teachers saw how mathemat-ics and science are harnessed and used by engineers and others. Teachers also found lessons in business, marketing, leadership, and teamwork at NASCAR’s Performance Instruction and Training Facility. “Not everyone in our group was a NASCAR fan, but the training session opened all our minds to the complexity of the sport and the automobile industry as a whole,” said Danny Johnson, an automotive service technology teacher at Northampton County High School–East. “They shared with us statistics regarding pit stops and how what happens at stops affects the race outcome. Teamwork was emphasized. Most of my students are NASCAR fans, and this will illustrate the importance of teamwork for them.” At the seminar, Johnson was happily surprised to reunite with two colleagues who also teach automotive technology—Ricky Lewis of James B. Dudley High School in Greensboro and Robert “Tiny” Salley of the Career and Technical Educational Magnet School of Wilkes County. The three originally met at NCCAT in 1996 at the seminar “Electric Vehicles: The Shock Heard Round the World.” “I remember that seminar like it was yester-day; it was very inspiring,” said Johnson, who now teaches an electric vehicle class. “In fact, Ricky and I attend an electric vehicle rally that our students host each year.” As to the mix of teachers and disciplines explored at “World in Motion: Careers and Creativity in the Car Industry,” Johnson said, “There were many ideas shared. It is always good to get different perspectives. It is through these types of learning experiences that we are able to grow as professionals and become better teachers in our chosen areas.” “World in Motion” puts learning in high gear As part of the Pit Crew Challenge, North Carolina teachers participate in a unique team building program that combines hands-on, experiential learning with interactive classroom sessions. Pictured above are three automotive service technology teachers (left to right): Ricky Lewis of James B. Suggs of Morrisville was elected chair of the NCCAT Board of Trustees at the board’s April 2009 meeting. Grace M. Edwards of Henrico was elected vice chair. During the October 2009 board meeting, two new appointments to the board were sworn in: Judge Willis P. Whichard of Chapel Hill and Barbara Hardy of Kitty Hawk. Both Whichard and Hardy were each appointed for one four-year term. In addition, Dr. William Harrison, chairman of the State Board of Education, became an ex officio member of the NCCAT Board of Trustees. Suggs succeeds Dr. Kenneth W. Wells of Manteo as board chair. Edwards follows Cherri Cheek of Ocean Isle as vice chair. Both Wells and Cheek rotated off the NCCAT Board of Trustees on June 30, after eight dynamic years of service. Both have generously agreed to continue their support of NCCAT by serving on the Board of Directors for the Development Foundation of NCCAT Inc. Suggs brings an opportune skill set to her new position as chair of the NCCAT Board of Trustees. Her career in education began as a middle school teacher in Wake County Public Schools and included service as Section Chief of school personnel support at the Department of Public Instruction, associate executive director for the North Carolina Association of School Administrators, and legislative director for the North Carolina State Board of Education. She currently consults for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “I am excited and deeply honored to work with NCCAT’s wonderful Board of Trustees to support North Carolina teachers,” Suggs said. “Our mission is vital, and we strive to provide teachers with great experi-ences as they connect with colleagues and improve their instructional practice. No other state provides this rich opportunity for its teachers; I am proud that North Carolina does, and I am ever grateful to our legislature for its vision in supporting this wonderful opportunity for our state’s teachers.” Suggs elected chair, new Board of Trustees members sworn in Barbara Hardy and Judge Willis P. Whichard were sworn in to the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching Board of Trustees during the semi-annual board meeting last October. Pictured here (left to right): Linda Suggs, chair of the NCCAT Board of Trustees; Hardy; Judge Whichard; and Dr. Mary McDuffie, NCCAT executive director. ELIZABETH A. GILLESPIE Throughout American history, events have occured that left many people wondering what really happened. Perhaps nowhere is this so starkly apparent than in the myth and mystique that surround the presidency and assassination of John F. Kennedy. NCCAT’s “Camelot: The Myth and Mystique of the Kennedy Years” seminar began with an informative history of the Kennedy family and a discussion of the politics of that time. Melinda Ratchford, associate professor of educa-tion at Belmont Abbey College, put history in the teachers’ hands by dividing them into small groups and giving each group one of the many conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination of President Kennedy to defend. Guided by Ratchford, the teachers conducted research on their theories using primary sources, and then each group presented its rationale as to why its theory was feasible. Teachers concluded the seminar with more than new-found knowledge about the Kennedy era. They were filled with renewed enthusiasm for active learning and active teaching. “This seminar has taught me new ways to approach history and keep my students engaged,” said Jameka Satterwhite, who teaches at Southern Middle School in Person County. Christy Kennedy, who teaches at Elizabeth Elementary School in Cleveland County, added, “I am on fire with ideas for my classroom.” Kennedy era sparks debate—and much more A. Smith Reynolds Foundation (ZSR) is providing critical support for NCCAT’s Beginning Teachers Model, a comprehensive professional development program that improves instructional methods and maximizes the effectiveness of North Carolina’s talented new teachers. With a two-year grant of $125,000 per year, ZSR is sup-porting NCCAT Connections, a yearlong induction program for teachers in their first year in the classroom. In the first year of the grant, NCCAT Connections is working with novice teachers in Bertie, Hertford, and Warren counties. Also, a one-year grant of $30,000 is allowing teachers from North Carolina’s most economi-cally distressed counties to participate in “Connect to Your Future: Celebrating Success in the Classroom,” a five-day residential seminar for teachers in their second or third year of teaching. Both programs help new teachers develop strong foundations in classroom management and instruc-tional practices while building a network of peer support. A key component of the NCCAT Connections program is the journey to NCCAT’s Cullowhee campus where begin-ning teachers grapple with the difficult challenge of meeting the instructional needs of children living in poverty. Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation grants $280,000 to NCCAT “We have benefited so much from our time here at NCCAT,” said Tana Sisler, a fourth-grade teacher at Ahoskie Elementary School. Amanda André, who teaches language arts at Hertford County Middle School, agreed. “Not only will we benefit from this experience, but our students will reap the rewards, too,” she said. Betty Pugh, executive director of Human Resources Services for the Hertford County Public Schools, said, “The NCCAT Connections program provides strong support for these beginning teachers and gives them instructional strate-gies they can implement in the classroom.” For more information, contact NCCAT Teacher Services at 800-922-0482 or email registrar@nccat.org. Support for the Development Foundation of NCCAT Inc. remains vigorous Through these challenging economic times, NCCAT—and thus North Carolina’s teachers and students—are benefiting from the ongoing support of corporations, foundations, and businesses. Gifts and grants received thus far in fiscal year 2009–2010 have bolstered NCCAT’s ability to continue successful programs for beginning teachers, advance new educational seminars, and enable more teachers to take advantage of NCCAT’s professional development opportu-nities than would be otherwise possible. Many of this year’s awards are investments in helping NCCAT move forward with its “Teaching Students of the 21st Century Initiative” by supporting seminars that focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The Dominion Foundation gave $6,400 through its 2009 Dominion Educational Partnership Grant for seminars dealing with environmental education. Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation also encouraged teacher develop-ment in STEM subjects with a $10,000 gift for seminar support. And the Charles M. and Mary D. Grant Foundation supported teacher development in STEM subjects with a $30,000 grant. The Belk Foundation fully funded an NCCAT Honored Educator Scholarship at $25,000. This scholarship covers all costs for a teacher to attend an NCCAT seminar each year, allowing NCCAT to expand its reach. Funds have also been provided by the Duke Energy Foundation, the Goodnight Educational Foundation, and the Golden LEAF Foundation. In addition to these grants and gifts, the Development Foundation of NCCAT continues to benefit from the ongoing support from a host of businesses, philanthropists, and interested organizations for its instructional programming. As budgets tighten, NCCAT recognizes the high value that individual donors and organizations place on the professional development programming NCCAT provides for North Carolina’s public school teachers. NCCAT’s seminars and programs for beginning teachers are designed to reinforce essential skills for good teaching, strengthen instructional practices in the classroom, and build professional networks. McDuffie was joined in the effort by Linda Suggs, chair of the NCCAT Board of Trustees, and Richard Schwartz, president of the Development Foundation of NCCAT Inc. The group met with U.S. Senator Kay Hagan and U.S. Representatives G.K. Butterfield, Larry Kissell, Mike McIntyre, David Price, and Heath Shuler. The lawmakers were briefed on two of NCCAT’s quintessential instructional programs: NCCAT’s Beginning Teachers Model, which focuses on improving instructional methods and maximizing effectiveness of new teachers; and NCCAT’s “Teaching Students of the 21st Century Initiative,” which ensures that North Carolina teachers have the global knowledge and essential skills to prepare today’s students for the world they will enter upon graduation. During the meeting with Hagan, the group discussed financial literacy education, a cause she championed in North Carolina and now has taken nationwide with her proposal of the Financial Literacy for Students Act of 2009. After meeting with the NCCAT contingent, Sen. Hagan said, “One of the most important ways to ensure student success is to make sure that our teachers have the necessary NCCAT briefs federal lawmakers A contingent of educational leaders representing the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching meet with U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre of the 7th District to discuss the importance of investing in and supporting North Carolina’s public schools. Pictured here (left to right): Richard Schwartz, president of the Development Foundation of NCCAT Inc.; Linda Suggs, chair of the NCCAT Board of Trustees; Rep. McIntyre; and Dr. Mary McDuffie, executive director of NCCAT. Focusing on financial literacy As personal financial literacy became a requirement in North Carolina’s curriculum, NCCAT designed a seminar to help teachers create stimulating lessons that bring this important subject to life for students. The NCCAT seminar “Dollars and Sense: Building Financial Literacy,” supported by a grant from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI), allowed teachers to explore ways to integrate financial literacy initiatives into their curriculums. Teachers participated in various sessions on financial planning, assessing and dealing with debt, and understanding investment choices. They also learned where they could find free resources within their own communities to support classroom activities. “Teachers actively developed strategies to help students deal with the real economic world and make sound, ethical financial decisions so they don’t become overwhelmed after graduation,” reported Winston Sharp, vice president of default servicing, loss mitigation, and collections at Wells Fargo in Wisconsin. “Teachers have the power to influence the decisions that will determine our future financial behavior as a nation,” he said. Ami Parker, a counselor at Highland School of Technology in Gaston County, said, “We learned commonsense solutions to financial planning problems. Everything that was presented gave me new ideas to teach students about financial literacy.” As students are bombarded with credit card offers before they even graduate from high school, financial literacy has become essential knowledge for achieving a successful, productive life. So essential, in fact, that U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan recently introduced a bill to provide all states with incentives to teach financial literacy in public schools. “This education will give our students the tools to make sound financial decisions when applying for credit cards, securing student loans, taking out a mortgage, or managing a budget,” Sen. Hagan said. Winston Sharp of Wells Fargo. www.nccat.org February 2010 NCCAT Winter News • 7 “Whatever subject one is studying, capturing the essence of that experience through both visual arts and writing engages both sides of the brain and strengthens learning and retention for students,” said Center Fellow Jane Dalton, who developed the seminar, “Exploring the Landscape Through Art and Writing.” The seminar took a group of North Carolina public school teachers and placed them in nature. There, they learned botany and natural history, as well as strategies for engaging students’ interest in the world around them. They reinforced what they were learning through journaling, visual arts, poetry, and prose. The successful results of this approach motivated Autumn Crisp, who teaches English at Northern Nash High School in Nash County, to enhance her curriculum. “In conjunction with the legendary and fictional accounts of journeys that I traditionally cover, I decided to include A Haiku Journey: Basho’s Narrow Road to a Far Province,” Crisp said. Basho lived in the seventeenth century and is known as the Japanese master of haiku. His journal chronicles his five-month walk through the remote northeastern provinces of Japan. “I thought about Basho’s writing in his travel diary and knew this would provide a wonderful opportunity for my students to incorporate nature writing,” Crisp said. Crisp attended the NCCAT seminar as the Mabel Roberson McIntyre Honored Educator Scholar. The scholarship honors Mabel Roberson McIntyre, a lifelong educator from Nash County. “In cultures worldwide, the natural world is a source of inspiration for art, poetry, and writing,” Dalton said. “Finding the intersections in our curriculum is as natural and easy as stepping out of the classroom and into nature.” Nature and art fortify learning and retention Diamonds Direct shines for teachers TOOTIE WATSON TARA MELTON-MILLER (2) A fundraising event hosted by Diamonds Direct Crabtree for the Development Foundation of NCCAT Inc. was a great success. More than one hundred people attended, with profits from the evening going to support NCCAT programming. Held on November 5, 2009 in Raleigh, the event’s highlight was a champagne diamond drop in which guests purchased glasses of champagne with the hope of finding a one-carat diamond at the bottom of their glass. A wide range of exclusive gifts, including jewelry from renowned designers, was also available to guests at very special pricing. These three met in 1996 at NCCAT’s “Electric Vehicles: The Shock Heard Round the World” seminar and reunited last fall at NCCAT’s “World in Motion: Careers and Creativity in the Car Industry” seminar, which was sponsored by NCADA.
