Applause NC’s top teacher calls for retaining “ best of the best” nccat THE NORTH CAROLINA CENTER FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF TEACHING 276 NCCAT Drive • Cullowhee, NC 28723- 9062 • Phone 828- 293- 5202 • www. nccat. org WINTER NEWSLETTER • VOLUME 20 • NUMBER 1 • JANUARY 2007 North Carolina’s 2006– 07 Teacher of the Year, who chose a career in public education over one in medicine, says students deserve caring and skilled teachers who are the “ best of the best.” Diana Beasley of Conover, whose outstanding career of twenty- four years teaching science won her the state’s top teaching honor, is calling on her teaching colleagues to “ set the bar of expectations high” not only for their students but for themselves. Beasley was in her junior year at the University of Virginia, planning to become a physician, when she volunteered to tutor high school students who were failing science. “ They fought me every step of the way at first, but once they learned to trust me because I believed in them and knew they could do it, they started to show the courage needed to overcome the frustration that a lifelong pattern of failure brings,” she said. The experience led to a change of heart— and of her college major. She switched from premed to education because “ I knew teaching would be my life. I honestly cannot imagine doing anything else.” Hickory Daily Record photo by Robert Reed A c a u s e f o r “ Thank you, Donors” The Annual Fund received more than $ 130,000 in contributions during fiscal year 2005– 06. In this issue we include the names of all donors. We thank you all— teachers, friends, businesses, foundations, and other supporters— for your generosity and continuing support . An exuberant Diana Beasley at student assembly. continued on page 2 As the state’s Teacher of the Year, Beasley is traveling across the state as ambassador for her profession and serving as an adviser to the State Board of Education. She likes to remind fellow teachers that their influence is powerful and enduring. “ As time passes, students may forget what you said, or even what you did, but they’ll never forget how you made them feel. That’s the funny thing about kids— you never think they are listening, yet years later they can quote verbatim what teachers said to them,” she said. By Christy McCarley Beasley emphasized the importance of hard work, high standards, and a relevant curriculum but also a caring and compassionate attitude. “ We must firmly believe that all children can and will learn. They may not all learn in the same way or at the same rate, but with a little patience and creativity, we can help them be successful,” she said. “ The curriculum is necessary material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.” Beasley traveled to Cullowhee last October to speak during a meeting of the board of trustees and NCCAT foundation’s board of directors. She said that she formed valuable relationships with other teachers while attending NCCAT programs. She expressed to the board members her appreciation for the opportunities NCCAT provides to teachers, allowing them to acquire new learning, collaborate with colleagues from across the state, and experience “ a rejuvenation of sorts, a renewal that opens a new eye to age- old concerns.” The future is bright for North Carolina’s schools, she added, because so many of its citizens and leaders have made public education a priority. “ Sure, we have our challenges, but I am convinced that we are on the right road,” she said. “ That doesn’t mean that there won’t be frustrations and delays but at the end of the day, the children are the ones who matter.” Golden Apple schools earn certificates Thirty North Carolina schools are receiving special certificates and a personal “ thank you” from NCCAT for their generosity and support. During her travels across the state throughout the year, Dee Grantham of the NCCAT staff, a retired Jackson County high school teacher, visits the schools to present the awards. At Holbrook Elementary in Fort Bragg, one of the schools recently visited, Grantham ( left) presented teacher Mary Ann Hardee, NCCAT Annual Fund school chair, and Priscilla Joiner, principal, with the certificate marking the school’s consistent giving to the NCCAT annual fund. For information about how to become a Golden Apple school, contact Grantham by phone at 800- 922- 0482 or 828- 293- 5202 or e- mail her at granthamd@ nccat. org. nccat www. nccat. org NCCAT Winter News 2 continued from page 1 Beasley leads science lab for her students at Hickory High. www. nccat. org January 2007 NCCAT Winter News 3 National board candidates find support and motivation By Zach Laminack Teachers who come to NCCAT for national board support seminars often find that the experience gives them more than they expected. Time after time, teachers attending the seminars report that having focused time to share ideas with teaching colleagues from all over the state, including facilitator-teachers who already have achieved national certification, is a major benefit. “ The seminar was a lifesaver for me,” Flora Elliott a teacher at Westover High of Fayetteville wrote in an e- mail sent after her experience. “ I was motivated by other teachers in attendance,” Elliott said. “ There was an ‘ If you can do it, I can do it’ attitude.” The five- day programs are designed to help teachers prepare their career portfolio and ready themselves for assessment by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. The national board sets high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do and certifies only teachers who meet those standards. NCCAT’s national board support began in 1996– 97 with two seminars. In ten years, the program, coordinated by Center Fellow Mary Kay Cooley, has expanded to include more than twenty seminars each year. Through the years, the national board support seminars have won financial support from the American Federation of Teachers, Cemala Foundation, DeWitt- Wallace/ Reader’s Digest Accomplished Teaching Initiative, Duke Energy Foundation, Golden LEAF Inc., North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, North Carolina Model Teacher Education Consortium, North Carolina Science Teachers’ Association, Progress Energy Foundation, and State Farm Insurance Companies. Seminar inspirations Artist and teacher Kathy Trost of Fayetteville draws her inspiration from her surroundings for a writing exercise. Trost, who teaches at Ponderosa Elementary, attended “ Writing from the Sea: Messages from the Heart” held in September in Ocracoke. The seminar was designed to help the teachers find ways that nature can stimulate the rewarding and introspective practice of writing for themselves and their students. PHOTO BY LINDA KINNEAR PHOTO BY BOB SCHATZ NCCAT board chairman promotes healthy schools NCCAT Board Chairman Dr. Kenneth Wells of Manteo has been named North Carolina’s “ Healthy Schools Superintendent of the Year” for 2006. The award was presented by the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance during its annual convention November 17 in Greensboro. Wells, superintendent of Perquimans County Schools for the past five years, was recognized for spearheading a variety of comprehensive programs to improve the health of students and staff of Perquimans County. Many of the programs involve successful collaborations with health professionals and agencies at the local and state levels. Highlights for school employees include health checks and good health and fitness seminars, smoking cessation classes, a new wellness center, and stress relief programs. Some of the health initiatives for students include healthier food choices in their cafeterias and at school events, anti- alcohol and drug education. Under Wells’ leadership, Perquimans County has hired more school nurses and counselors and created partnerships with dentists and physicians to provide services to some students. Wells was named to the NCCAT board of trustees in 2001. He is currently serving his second four- year term and was elected chairman in 2005. NCCAT Winter News 4 nccat www. nccat. org Dr. Kenneth Wells ( center) and colleagues in Greensboro. Cynthia Bolton Gary was recently named NCCAT center fellow, joining a faculty of ten members who design and implement more than ninety residential seminars each year for public school teachers. Gary comes to NCCAT from Aurora ( Illinois) University, where she was an associate professor of educational psychology. She earned a bachelor’s degree in public health and a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She holds a master’s in education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The former director of the Gary Academy, an independent home school, Gary also was an associate professor of educational psychology at the University of South Carolina at Aiken and an instructor in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has been a classroom teacher, assistant principal, and a counselor for Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools. Gary is the author of several professional articles including “ Developing Teachers: A Novice- Expert Study of Initial Teacher Preparations,” available on the Educational Resources Information Center Database, and has made presentations at numerous state and national conferences. Cynthia Gary named center fellow National board seminars win major grant funding NCCAT’s national board support seminars for teachers have recently won grants for 2007. In November, Golden LEAF Inc. of Rocky Mount awarded $ 150,000. Progress Energy Foundation of Raleigh awarded $ 15,000 in October. For the Golden LEAF grant, preference will be given to teachers who instruct students in career and technical education, science, and mathematics, and who work in counties whose economies have traditionally been dependent on tobacco products. The grant from Progress Energy will provide national board support seminars for fifteen teachers of math and science. National certification recognizes teachers for achieving high standards through a rigorous performance- based assessment that takes from one to three years to complete. During the five- day NCCAT seminars, teachers work with facilitators who hold national board certification and reflect on best teaching practices for the portfolio required by the NBPTS. “ These grants will provide essential support for a highly deserving and hard- working group of national board candidates who are role models in their schools and communities,” said Dr. Mary McDuffie, executive director of NCCAT. “ Through these awards, Golden LEAF and Progress Energy honor excellent teaching professionals.” Each year, more than 450 teachers seeking professional excellence through the certification process attend NCCAT’s national board support seminars. Before he joined Atlanta Christian College, Lilly was principal consultant for LillyCorp Consulting of Atlanta, where he helped clients develop business plans and raised venture capital financing for start- up operations. Lilly was the co- founder of AutoTrader. com Inc., one of the nation’s top online resources for automobile classifieds and consumer information. Richard Schwartz of Raleigh, president of the NCCAT foundation, said, “ David arrives with a love and enthusiasm for teachers, born from a family that includes teachers, and he has a great admiration for NCCAT and its mission. The foundation is now poised to make a significant leap forward.” H e is a graduate of Emory University, where he received a master of business administration degree, and of Auburn University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in business management. Lilly heads foundation David J. Lilly of Atlanta, Georgia, has been named director of the Development Foundation of NCCAT Inc. He comes to NCCAT from Atlanta Christian College in East Point, Georgia, where he was director of major gifts and planned giving. “ David Lilly has a solid business background and is widely respected in both the corporate and the nonprofit worlds,” said Dr. Mary McDuffie, executive director of NCCAT. “ His record of successes in development and fundraising lend him strong leadership skills that will be wonderful assets.” PHOTO BY BOB SCHATZ NCCAT Winter News 6 nccat Blues shape a lyrical learning environment By Donna Glee Williams Rooted in Africa, born out of slavery and struggle, and carried around the world by its pulsing power, Blues music has influenced every musical tradition it touched, from classical to country. On October 30, 2006, twenty- three teachers gathered to study this uniquely American art form, led by Blues great Kat Williams. As she guided their exploration of the lives of Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Ma Rainey, Big Mama Thornton, and Etta James, she also shared her own life story with seminar participants. Kat was born to a 14- year- old mother in Buffalo, New York, and raised as the thirty- first foster child of Mary and L. C. Williams, who adopted her. At nine, she became the caregiver for her beloved mother; at seventeen, she was homeless on the streets. A softball scholarship took her to Niagara University, which she eventually left to become a New York state prison guard for ten years. After leaving corrections, Kat relocated to Asheville and began a singing career which has included being the “ surprise” at a surprise party for Robin Williams and opening for Jay Leno. To create confident, informed, and responsible Blues educators, Kat worked with NCCAT faculty to design an interdisciplinary survey of the form— from its earliest roots in African call- and- response traditions, Southern field hollers, work songs, jug bands, minstrel shows, church music, and ragtime. Teachers viewed archival footage, listened to recordings, wrote their own Blues lyrics, and discussed the historical, social, and political issues related to cultural cross- pollination of the arts. As apprentices to a master of the vocal style, they sang for each other in learning exercises. The performances were so successful that Kat invited teacher Faye Harrington to open the Thursday night concert which provided the seminar’s grand finale, while teacher John Hilston sat in with her band on the guitar. The final concert gave new insight on the phrase “ raising the rafters.” The Katusi library saw Kat and her band perform with the same level of intensity that she offers in major coliseums. Teachers experienced the excitement that Blues can bring to an audience. NCCAT security guard Dale Nations reported he could hear the music on his rounds “ all the way back by the sheds.” After dutifully signing autographs, Kat Williams took her leave of the teachers who will never forget her. The fruitfulness of arts in education is reaffirmed by “ Champions of Change: the Impact of the Arts on Learning.” In this review of studies at a number of universities, researchers found that arts education can enhance academic achievement, reach students on the margins of the educational system, create an effective learning environment, and connect learners’ experiences to the world outside of school. Multiple studies cite strong positive impacts across socioeconomic groups with respect to both academic and personal success. www. nccat. org Kat Williams guides NCCAT participants through the Blues. NCCAT Winter News 7 www. nccat. org January 2007 Endowed scholarships celebrated statewide The contributions of five of the state’s outstanding educators— Jean Powell of Clinton, Boyce Deitz of Sylva, Robert Bridges of Raleigh and his wife, the late Hattie Bridges, and Luz Frye of Winston- Salem— were celebrated in ceremonies held across the state as scholarship funds named for them reached the $ 25,000 endowment level. Jean Powell, an inspiring visionary Powell, the former North Carolina Teacher of the Year ( 1983) who inspired the creation of NCCAT, was honored in a ceremony held December 5, 2006, in Clinton. The scholarship was endowed through contributions from friends and family and from proceeds from the first annual Golden Apple Gala held in February in Raleigh. The Clinton City Board of Education also contributed $ 9,150 to the scholarship, which will be awarded annually to the Clinton City Schools’ Teacher of the Year. Boyce Deitz, WNC’s legendary football coach The ceremony for Boyce Deitz was held August 21, 2006, in Bryson City during a back- to- school breakfast for Swain County teachers. Deitz is a former football coach at Sylva- Webster High School, Swain County High School, and Smoky Mountain High School, and a member of the Jackson County, Swain County, and North Carolina Athletic Directors Association, North Carolina Coaches Association, and the Western North Carolina Hall of Fame. The Deitz scholarship is for teachers from Swain and Jackson Counties. The Bridges, lifelong Wake County educators A ceremony honoring the contributions of lifelong Wake County educators, Robert Bridges, and his wife, the late Hattie Bridges, was held at Enloe High School in Raleigh September 27, 2006. Hattie Bridges taught physical education in the Wake County Public School System and was department chair and head basketball coach at Enloe High School. Robert Bridges is a former classroom teacher and the former superintendent of Wake County Schools. The Bridges’ children, son Randy Bridges and daughter LaPonda Parker set up the scholarship. Contributions to the endowment came from friends, family, and colleagues who have admired the Bridges for many years. The scholarship will benefit teachers from Wake County. Luz Frye, foreign language teacher- leader Luz Frye of Raleigh, who taught foreign languages for Wake County schools for thirty years, and taught English as a second language, was recognized during a meeting of the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina held at the Sheraton Capital Center in Raleigh on September 29, 2006. Frye is an NCCAT alumna. The NCCAT scholarship will be awarded to a teacher of a foreign language or a teacher of English as a second language. POSTAGE PAID CULLOWHEE, NC PERMIT NO. 1 Scenic solution The fish and snapping turtles that live in the NCCAT pond are enjoying cleaner water these days, thanks to a new water feature. But what appears at first glance to be just an ordinary fountain actually holds much more than a scenic role. “ It’s an aeration device that is providing an environmentally friendly solution to an algae problem,” said Will Putman, facilities coordinator. “ And while it is beautiful, its primary purpose is to help maintain a healthier home for the fish.” Before implementing the device, the facilities crew relied on chemicals to control harmful algae that was growing on the water’s surface and threatening the health of the fish. Now the need for using the chemicals is significantly reduced. The pond is home to a variety of fish species including bluegill, grass carp, koi, catfish, and sun perch. For many years, teachers have enjoyed tossing them bread crumbs and other treats, and since fishing is prohibited, some of the creatures now measure close to thirty- six inches. National board candidates Tasha Cooper of Rocky Mount, Chauncey Barber of Mill Spring, and Flora Elliott of Fayetteville. NCCAT Winter News 5 www. nccat. org January 2007 Science group discussion for national board candidates at NCCAT.
