| 7| Grapevine Through The Shelton- Badgett NC Center for Viticulture & Enology After the groundbreaking ceremony in May 2009, construction for the Center began with Blue Ridge Enterprises as the project contractor. Construction continued throughout the 2009- 2010 fiscal year and completion of the facility is scheduled for October 2010. The Center will house a state- of- the- art, commercially bonded, teaching winery. Crushing, fermentation, and barrel storage areas will allow students to carry out the process of transforming grapes into wine. Students will bottle, label, and market the wine produced. The Center will have classrooms, instructor offices, a resource library, a climate- controlled wine cellar, a microbiology lab, and a 3,800 square foot hall for college and community special events. A dedicated website for the Center ( www. NCviticulturecenter. com) features program updates, provides industry resources, announces SCC viticulture and enology events, and invites the public to sign up for a quarterly newsletter. August 2009 December 2009 June 2010 Uptown Wine & Gallery Surry Cellars, Surry Community College’s student- produced wine, won three prestigious awards this year in wine competitions. In January, the 2008 Chardonel won a silver medal in the white hybrid category at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition — the largest and one of the best known wine competitions in the United States. In addition, the Chardonel won a bronze medal in the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition in New York, where more than 50 judges tasted 3,010 wines from all 50 states. The 2008 Petit Manseng won a bronze medal in the same competition. Uptown Wine & Gallery is a unique, collaborative venture among the non- profit Yadkin Arts Council, Surry Community College, and River de Vine Vineyards. This unlikely trio banded together during a challenging economic time to create a cross- market for art and wine, which is a natural pairing. In recognition of this partnership that made the Uptown Wine and Gallery a reality, Surry Community College was presented with an Economic Development Award by the Yadkin County Chamber. Uptown Wine and Gallery, 240 East Main Street, Yadkinville, is adjacent to the Yadkin Cultural Arts Center ( now under construction and slated for an early fall opening). Located in the center of a growing downtown cultural cluster, Uptown will benefit from the addition of the Cultural Arts Center when it starts to provide live performances, art exhibitions and workshops. Plans to introduce working artists’ studios are underway as a third component of this cultural cluster. Dubbed “ YARD” for Yadkin Artists Residing Downtown, the artists will create and sell their work from these publicly accessible spaces. Visitors will be able to view the creative process of glass blowers, potters, weavers, painters, and other skilled craftsmen.
