EASLEY PROCLAIMS MAY 16 TOURISM DAY Legislators to Participate in Racing Pit Crew Challenge RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley today proclaimed May 16 as North Carolina Tourism Day in honor of the powerful economic, social and cultural roles the industry plays in the state. Travel organizations will host competitions, exhibits and presentations in downtown Raleigh to mark the day. “More than 60 million people traveled to the Tar Heel State last year and spent $14.2 billion during their visits,” Easley said. “Tourism dollars have strengthened the economies of communities across the state and provided jobs for more than 185,000 hardworking North Carolina families. Tourism Day is an opportunity to recognize this important industry for its contributions to our economy and our quality of life. ” To celebrate the tourism industry, members of the General Assembly will compete in a racing Pit Crew Challenge outside of the Legislative Building (16 West Jones St.) at noon. Teams from the House and Senate will compete in changing the tires on a NASCAR race car. The event is designed to highlight the NASCAR Hall of Fame scheduled to open in Charlotte by 2010. The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority will host displays and activities from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. outside the Legislative Building. Inside the building, the N.C. Travel Industry Association will coordinate exhibits to showcase the state’s tourism industry and its growth in recent years. Visitors spent $14.2 billion last year, an increase of 7.3 percent from the $13.2 billion spent in 2004 and the largest single-year increase since 2000. Tourism generated $748 million in state tax revenue last year, up 5.2 percent from 2004, and $461 million in local tax revenue.
