EASLEY ANNOUNCES 2005 TOURISM ECONOMIC IMPACT FIGURES Visitor Spending Increases 7.3 Percent, Marking the Largest Increase since 2000 RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley announced today that visitors to North Carolina spent $14.2 billion in 2005, which is an increase of 7.3 percent from 2004 and the largest single-year increase since 2000. “Tourism is a driving force in our economy, generating millions of dollars in revenue and creating thousands of jobs for North Carolina families,” said Easley. “I am committed to maintaining our position as one of the top travel destinations in the country.” The economic impact figures are the preliminary results of an annual study of economic impact of the travel industry in North Carolina conducted by the Travel Industry Association of America. The study uses tax revenue data to determine the overall economic impact of travel from both domestic and international sources. The preliminary results were also released today at the 2006 Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Durham. Highlights include: • 2005 total domestic expenditures saw an increase of 7.3 percent to $14.2 billion, up from $13.3 billion in 2004. • The travel and tourism industry employees more than 185,000 North Carolinians. • The tourism industry generated a total of more than $2.3 billion in tax revenues, including $1.1 billion in federal taxes. • State tax revenue totaled more than $747 million through state sales and excise taxes, and taxes on personal and corporate income. • More than $461 million in local taxes were generated from sales and property tax revenue from travel-generated and travel-supported businesses. For more information about the travel impact numbers call the Travel and Tourism Division of the N.C. Department of Commerce at 1/800-787-0670. ###
