EASLEY ANNOUNCES $200,000 GRANT FOR INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS TO SPUR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN DOBSON RALEIGH - Gov. Mike Easley announced today a $200,000 grant to expand water and sewer infrastructure to promote economic development in the Town of Dobson. The money comes from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), a federal-state partnership, to enhance economic development potential. “This grant will support communities in Western North Carolina as they make the necessary investments for new and expanding businesses to thrive,” said Easley. “A strong infrastructure, along with a superior education system and positive business climate, is key to our state’s economic success.” Each year, Easley selects projects to receive money from North Carolina’s portion of ARC funds. The ARC, established by Congress in 1965, works to advance economic and community development in the Appalachian Region. The Town of Dobson will use grant funds to extend water and sewer service from the town along Zephyr Road to the intersection of Zephyr Road and exit 93 of Interstate 77. The new infrastructure will serve a planned commercial development. Upon completion, the water and sewer project is expected to spur the creation of 63 new jobs, with the potential to create 500 jobs by the end of the commercial development. The Appalachian Regional Commission provides grants to more than 400 counties in 13 states. The region includes all of West Virginia and parts of North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. ###
