EASLEY ANNOUNCES 200 JOBS AND $14 MILLION INVESTMENT IN RALEIGH JDIG Helps MeadWestvaco Open Packaging Innovation Center on Centennial Campus RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley today announced that global packaging company MeadWestvaco Corporation will establish a new Packaging Innovation Center on N.C. State University’s Centennial Campus. The new center, which will centralize the company’s research and development, engineering and other technology-focused functions, will create 200 jobs and an investment of $14 million during the next four years. “Today’s announcement brings a top-notch research and development facility to N.C. State’s Centennial Campus and provides 200 high-paying jobs for our citizens,” said Easley. “Working with N.C. State, MeadWestvaco will develop new products and improve its manufacturing bringing them a stronger company and bringing the state a stronger economy. We are going to continue to bring companies like this to North Carolina by providing a No. 1 ranked business climate, a high skill workforce and the ability for partnerships with our nationally-renowned universities.” MeadWestvaco formed in 2002 as the result of a merger between The Mead Corporation and Westvaco Corporation. The company currently operates in 29 countries with global sales exceeding $6 billion in 2005. The new Packaging Innovation Center is part of the MeadWestvaco reorganization plan aimed at strengthening the company’s position in the packaging market. The company’s plans, announced today, include consolidating its U.S. corporate locations and key administrative functions into a new global headquarters in Richmond and moving the company’s U.S. research and development facilities from Ohio and Maryland to Centennial Campus. MeadWestvaco currently operates four packaging facilities and sales offices in North Carolina that employ 556 workers. The facilities are located in Charlotte, Garner, Grover and Mebane. The 200 new jobs will be primarily research positions. While individual wages will vary, the average weekly pay for all the jobs will be $1,831 not including benefits. That is more than double Wake County’s weekly average wage of $761 per week, without benefits. “The access to state-of-the-art technology and quality research partnerships through N.C. State University’s Centennial Campus is unparalleled,” said company Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John A. Luke Jr. “We look forward to bringing value to the Raleigh community and we are confident this move will result in long-term success for our customers and our company.” - more -
