Michael F. Easley Governor State of North Carolina Office of the Governor Governor's Press Office State Capitol, Raleigh, NC 27603-8001 (919) 733-5612 - Toll Free 1-800-662-7005 FAX (919) 733-5166 For Release: IMMEDIATE Contact: Sherri Johnson Date: January 21, 2005 Phone: 919/733-5612 GOV. EASLEY URGES MOTORISTS TO STAY HOME AND OFF THE ROADS UNTIL WINTER WEATHER PASSES AND HIGHWAYS ARE SAFE AND CLEAR RALEIGH - Gov. Mike Easley is urging motorists to stay home and off the roads until the winter weather passes and highways are safe and clear. Throughout the night, as much as xx inches of snow fell across North Carolina making for hazardous driving conditions this morning. “Our DOT crews were out well ahead of the storm to spread salt and de-ice the roads,” said Easley. “I appreciate the cooperation of citizens this morning in staying off the roadways so they can complete their work and ensure that highways are safe for travel.” Easley also encouraged citizens who must go out to check road conditions in their areas ahead of time and take precautions for safe travel. For the latest information on road conditions, citizens may call 511 or access the DOT web site at www.ncdot.org (click on Traffic and Travel Conditions). NCDOT crews worked yesterday afternoon to pre-treat bridges, overpasses and sections of major highways in preparation for the forecasted snow tonight. They are using anti-icing treatments which may include salt brine and calcium chloride. Crews are already out plowing highways and spreading additional salt and sand. When moisture covers the roadway and temperatures are near or below freezing, the State Highway Patrol recommends that drivers increase following distances and decrease speed. When black ice on the roadways occurs, motorists should be especially cautious in curves and on ramps and overpasses. If you must travel, you should take the following precautions: • Reduce your speed. Driving at the regular speed limit will reduce your ability to control the car if you begin to slide. • Leave plenty of room between you and other vehicles. Bridges and overpasses accumulate ice first. Approach them with extreme caution and do not apply your brakes while on the bridge. • If you do begin to slide, take your foot off the gas and turn the steering wheel IN THE DIRECTION OF THE SLIDE. Do NOT apply the brakes as that will cause further loss of control of the car. If you become trapped in your car:
