EASLEY ANNOUNCES $22 MILLION EXPANSION BY KORDSA USA One North Carolina Fund Grant Helps Scotland County Company Grow RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley announced today that Kordsa USA Inc. will invest $22 million to modernize and expand its tire cord fabric twisting and weaving plant in Laurel Hill. The announcement was made possible in part by a $75,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund. “Kordsa USA is owned by DUSA International, a global leader with manufacturing facilities in North America, South America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East,” Easley said. “This company chose to expand in North Carolina shows that we are making the right decisions and investments to remain a top competitor in the global economy.” Kordsa plans to construct a new 216,000 square-foot building at the company’s existing site. State-of-the-art twisters and looms will replace older production machinery and new equipment will be added. The expansion will create seven new jobs in addition to the 177 workers currently employed at the plant. The jobs pay an average of $10 to $12 per hour. “This project is a major step forward for DUSA International and Kordsa USA’s future competitiveness and growth, and reflects our commitment to our customers, to our employees, and to Scotland County and the surrounding communities in North Carolina,” said Peter Hemken, chief executive officer of DUSA International. “The business friendly environment in North Carolina, the quality of our workforce, and the state and local incentives made available to us were major factors in our decision to locate this investment in Laurel Hill.” The One North Carolina Fund, which assisted this project, helps the state recruit and expand quality jobs by providing financial assistance to businesses or industries deemed by the governor to be vital to a healthy and growing state economy. Through the use of this fund, more than 14,000 jobs and $1.8 billion in investment have been created since 2001.
