MICHAEL F. EASLEY GOVERNOR FAIR HOUSlNG MONTH 2006 BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA A PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, April 2006 marks the 38'h anniversary of the Federal Fair Housing Act of 1968 and the 23rd anniversary of the State Fair Housing Act; and · WHEREAS, the State Fair Housing Act of 1983 and the Federal Fair Housing Act of 1968 prohibit discrimination in housing because of "race, color, religion, sex, national origin, handicapping condition and familial status"; and WHEREAS, an important concern for Norlh Carolina individuals and families is the availability of decent and affordable housing; and WHEREAS, lhe NORTH CAROLINA HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION, through its coordinated efforts with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, county and local governments, fair housing organizations, concerned citizens and the housing industry, continues to strive toward promoting broader housing choice in Norlh Carolina, promoting understanding of the State Fair Housing Act and lhe Federal Fair Housing Act, encouraging integrated communities and/or neighborhoods, securing compliance wilh state and federal fair housing Jaws, eliminating discrimination in housing, and punishing lhose who violate lhe State's Fair Housing Act; and WHEREAS, lhe Norlh CaroLina Human Relations Commission investigated more than 200 complaints of discrimination in 2005; NOW, THEREFORE, I, MICHAEL F. EASLEY, Governor of lhe State of Norlh Carolina, do hereby proclaim April2006 as "FAIR HOUSING MONTH" in Norlh Carolina and encourage our citizens to rededicate themselves to ensuring that fair housing laws are always upheld and that citizens are protected against discrimination. MICHAEL F. EASLEY IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and afftxed the Great Seal of lhe State of North Carolina at lhe Capitol in Raleigh this eighlh day of February in the year of our Lord two thousand and six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hu~dred and thirtieth.
