EASLEY ANNOUNCES THREE NEW APPOINTMENTS TO GOLDEN L.E.A.F. RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley today announced three new appointments to the Golden L.E.A.F. (Long-term Economic Assistance Foundation). The appointments were made to three slots that became vacant this month. Easley’s three bipartisan appointments to the Golden L.E.A.F. have the highest experience and knowledge of economic development issues. “It is important to have people serving on the board who not only care about rural North Carolina, but who also know what steps to take to move our rural economy forward,” said Easley. “These individuals can begin to create jobs for our citizens right away.” Easley appointed Kel Landis of Rocky Mount. Landis is the President of RBC Centura and serves as the co-chair of FoR ENC, the Foundation of Renewal for Eastern North Carolina, a group dedicated to the economic revitalization of rural North Carolina, concentrating on the 41 counties east of I-95. “From his commitment to rebuilding the economy after the flooding from Hurricane Floyd, as well as his current work with FoR ENC, Kel has demonstrated his commitment, experience and ability to help the Golden L.E.A.F. carry out its stated mission,” said Easley. Easley also appointed Erskine Bowles of Charlotte. Bowles is the Managing Director of Carousel Capital Investment. He chaired the Rural Prosperity Task Force and is the former head of the Small Business Administration. Bowles also served as the Chief of Staff to President Clinton. “As chair of the Rural Prosperity Task Force, Erskine has demonstrated his passion for developing the economy of rural North Carolina,” said Easley. “And his business background is completely consistent with the needs of the Golden L.E.A.F. He has the energy, passion and expertise to make this board work.” William D. Johnson of Raleigh was also appointed to the Foundation. Johnson is the President and CEO of Progress Energy Service Company.
