BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE GOVERNOR STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR 20301 MAIL SERVICE CENTER • RALEIGH, NC 27699‐0301 Nov. 1, 2011 Contact: Chris Mackey Office: (919) 733‐5612 Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Workforce Development GREENSBORO – Governor Bev Perdue announced the Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Workforce Development for 2011 that were awarded in Greensboro earlier this month. A Stanly County manufacturer, a trailblazing community college training program and four North Carolinians are being recognized for their exceptional accomplishments and contributions in helping North Carolina achieve its workforce development goals. “Our hard-working and highly-skilled workers are the gem of our efforts to create jobs and they are leading our economic recovery,” said Gov. Perdue. “These awards show why our exceptional workforce continues to attract new businesses to North Carolina and encourage existing ones to expand. I congratulate these award winners for their determination, innovation and commitment to helping make our employees the nation’s best.” The N.C. Commission on Workforce Development recognized these outstanding individuals and businesses as part of the 2011 Workforce Development Partnership Conference in Greensboro. Award recipients are as follows: Rocky Minton, Wilkesboro: Governor’s Award for Excellence in Workforce Development, Outstanding Adult Participant. Despite kidney failure and transplant surgery, Minton obtained certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant I (CNAI) and completed an Associate Nursing Degree Program. Minton finishing nursing school while working as a CNAI, a demanding task for any student made all the more difficult by serious health battles. Brendon Davis, Selma: Governor’s Award for Excellence in Workforce Development, Outstanding Youth Participant. Through the “Yes I Can” Youth Program, Davis achieved his goal of completing GED classes. While taking classes, Davis worked at the Selma Housing Authority and became involved in community service events and leadership activities.
