Mike Easley appointed Dr. Assad Meymandi of Raleigh and Jimi Sutton of Elizabeth City to serve on the North Carolina Arts Council. Meymandi, a psychiatrist, has a distinguished reputation as a patron of the arts, sciences and humanities in North Carolina. He has served on the Boards of United Arts of Raleigh and Wake County and the Raleigh Oratorio Society. He currently serves on the boards of the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild, the Performing Art Institute of North Carolina, the Triangle Opera Company, NCSU Friends of the Library, and N.C. Medical Society Foundation. He also serves on the N.C. Humanities Council Advisory Board and the nominating committee of the N.C. Medical Society. Sutton is an art teacher at the A-Plus designated Currituck County High School. He has been recognized in "Who’s Who/America’s High School Teachers" and was named “Employee of the Year” in 1997. He is a North Carolina member of A-Plus Fellows and also is a member of the Currituck Arts Council. He is a member of the Community Leadership Group of Elizabeth City and sits on the board of Pocosin Arts in Tyrrell County. His arts interests include pastels, acrylics, watercolor, air brush, ceramics and pottery. The Governor recently reappointed Alberta Cuthbertson of Greensboro, Marianne Hayworth of High Point, Mary Jane Letts of Winston-Salem, Janet Parks of Fayetteville, David Perry of Carrboro and Ed Wilson of Winston-Salem to serve on the council. The N.C. Arts Council is made up of 24 members, all appointed by the Governor, who serve three-year terms. The mission of the N.C. Arts Council, which celebrates those who create and enjoy art in all 100 counties, is to enrich the cultural life of the state. The Arts Council nurtures and supports excellence in the arts and provides opportunities for every North Carolinian to experience the arts. A division of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, the Arts Council further serves as a catalyst for the development of arts organizations and facilities throughout the state as it makes grants and offers technical assistance. ###
