Mike Easley has appointed Betsy E. Brown of Chapel Hill and has reappointed Robert H. Long of Chapel Hill and Angel E. Khoury of Manteo to the Roanoke Island Commission. Brown is the associate vice president for academic affairs in the University of North Carolina Office of the President. Prior to joining the Office of the President, she was the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Winthrop University in South Carolina from 1994 to 2000. She has also served as associate vice president for academic programs and teaching at Winthrop and has taught English at Queens College in Charlotte, Pennsylvania State University and Ohio State University. Brown received her bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University and her master’s and doctorate from Ohio State University. Long is a theater building design consultant. He is a member and past president of the American Society of Theatre Consultants. Long received his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Khoury is a writer. She is a member of the Outer Banks History Center Associates, Dare County Arts Council and Maritime Committee of Roanoke Island Commission. Khoury is the author of “Manteo: A Roanoke Island Town.” The commission advises the Secretary of the Department of Transportation on matters pertaining to the restoration, preservation and enhancement of the appearance and aesthetic quality of U.S. Highway 64/264 and N.C. Highway 400 travel corridors on Roanoke Island. There are 25 members on the commission, each serving a two-year term. The governor appoints seven members. ###
