EASLEY REAPPOINTS GREENE AND APPOINTS CUENCA TO CANCER COORDINATION AND CONTROL COMMITTEE RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley has reappointed Fredrick L. Greene of Charlotte and appoints Rosa E. Cuenca of Greenville to the North Carolina Advisory Committee on Cancer Coordination and Control. Greene is chairman of the Department of General Surgery at Carolinas Medical Center and served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corp. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons and chairman of the Commission on Cancer, American College of Surgeons. Greene received the Distinguished Service Award from the Association of North Carolina Cancer Registers in 2006. He received his Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Virginia and is a graduate of the University of Virginia Medical School. Cuenca is an associate professor of surgery, director of the Breast Center and surgical director of photodynamic therapy at East Carolina University. She is a board member of the North Carolina Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. Cuenca received her Bachelor’s degree in public health from UNC at Chapel Hill. She is a graduate of ECU’s Brody School of Medicine. The committee recommends to the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services a plan for the statewide implementation of an interagency comprehensive coordinated cancer control program and identifies and examines the limitations and problems associated with existing laws, regulations, programs and services related to cancer control. The committee also examines financing and access to cancer control services for North Carolina citizens. The board has 34 members, each serving a four-year term. The governor appoints 23 members. The senate president pro tempore and the speaker of the house each appoint five members. The secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources also serves on the board. ###
