EASLEY REAPPOINTS MEARES AND APPOINTS HUNT TO UNC-PEMBROKE BOARD OF TRUSTEES RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley has reappointed Carl W. Meares Jr. of Fair Bluff and appointed Milton R. Hunt of Pembroke to the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Pembroke Board of Trustees Meares is president of Ellis Mears and Son Inc. in Fair Bluff and chair of the UNC-Pembroke Board of Trustees. He is chairman of the Columbus Regional Healthcare Systems Board of Trustees, mayor pro tem of the Fair Bluff Town Council, vice chairman of the Lumbee River Conservancy and a member of the Columbus County Committee of 100. Meares received his bachelor’s degree in English from UNC-Chapel Hill. Hunt has served as mayor of Pembroke for 22 years and branch chairman of the Progressive State Bank for 18 years. He is former chief chairman of the Lumbee Tribe. Hunt received the Robeson County Public Library Annual Service Award in 1998. He graduated from Pembroke High School. The board promotes the sound development of the institution within the functions prescribed for it, helping it to serve the state in a way that will complement the activities of the other institutions and aiding it to perform at a high level of excellence in every endeavor. The board has 13 members, each serving a four-year term. The governor appoints four members. ###
