BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE GOVERNOR PRESERVATION MONTH 2011 BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF N0RTH CAROLINA A PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, all across North Carolina there are places that have contributed to our experience as North Carolinians, including battlefields, ships, churches, historic neighborhoods and house museums; and WHEREAS, histqric preservation is an effective tool for managing growth and sustainable development, revitalizing neighborhoods, fostering local pride and maintaining community character while enhancing livability; and WHEREAS, historic preservation is relevant for all communities, both urban and rural, and for people of all ages, all walks of life and all ethnic backgrounds; and WHEREAS, it is important to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the contributions made by dedicated individuals in helping to preserve th~ tangible aspects of the heritage that has shaped us as a people; and WHEREAS, activities such as volunteering to assist a community preservation project, posting an educational history event, or including historic sites and buildings in vacation planning, help promote an understanding and appreciation of our State's rich heritage; and WHEREAS, the State Historic Preservation Office identifies, protects, and enhances historic properties and di stricts through tax incentives, architectural surveys, information and technical assistance for public and private property owners; and WHEREAS, historic preservation tax incentives in North Carolina have generated more than $1 billion in private investment in preserving and restoring the State's historic properties since 1998; and WHEREAS, historic preservation projects create jobs for North Carolinians in the areas of heritage tourism, construction, building materials, landscaping and architecture while enhancing local property values and tax bases; and WHEREAS, there are more than 2,700 historic properties and districts around the State of North Carolina that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places; and WHEREAS, "Celebrating America's Treasures" is the theme for National Preservation Month 2011 , cosponsored by the State Historic Preservation Office and the National Trust for Historic Preservation; NOW, THEREFORE, I, BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE, Governor of the State ofNorth Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 2011 , as "PRESERVATION MONTH" in North Carolina, and call upon the citizens of this State to observe and Month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities. at the Capitol in Raleigh Independence of the BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE to set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina . , •.
