BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE GOVERNOR HEMOPHILIA AWARENESS MONTH 2012 BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA A PROCLAMATION yvHEREAS, hemophilia is a genetic disease in which the blood will not clot properly because a specific clotting factor is missing or defective, predominantly affecting males, and occurring in 1 in 5,000 live male births; and WHEREAS, von Willebrand Disease is a similar, but different and more common, inherited bleeding disorder, occurring in 1 to 2 percent of the population in both males and females, that affects the blood's ability to clot normally due to lack of von Willebrand Factor and requires medication in order to facilitate proper blood clotting; and WHEREAS, hemophilia and von Willebrand Disease affect approximately 20,000 people in the United States, with approximately 1,200 of those people living with hemophilia or von Willebrand Disease reported and recorded as living in the State ofNorth Carolina, with high concentrations of people living with hemophilia, especially in the Triad, Pembroke and surrounding communities; and WHEREAS, hemophilia patients require lifelong infusions of clotting factor therapies that replace missing or deficient blood proteins, and often experience prolonged bleeding following injury or surgery and, in severe cases, spontaneous bleeding into joints and muscles; and WHEREAS, currently, there is no cure for hemophilia or von Willebrand Disease; and WHEREAS, according to the National Hemophilia Foundation, more than 70 percent of people around the world who suffer from hemophilia still do not have access to the treatment they need; and WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina joins MedPro Rx, Inc., and other interested agencies and organizations in promoting research aimed at finding better treatments and cures for bleeding and clotting disorders and a greater understanding of the genetic basis ofhemophilia; NOW, THEREFORE, I, BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE, Governor of the State ofNorth Carolina, do hereby proclaim March 2012, as "HEMOPHILIA AWARENESS MONTH" in North Carolina and commend this observance to all citizens. BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE , I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of Raleigh this eighth day of March in the year of our Lord two thousand and twelve, and of the Independence ofthe United States of America the two hundred and thirty-sixth.
