BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE GOVERNOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK 2011 BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA A PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the United States Department of State and the U.S. Department ofEducation have declared November 14-18,2011, as International Education Week in observance of the many important contributions of international education to our nation's peace and prosperity; and WHEREAS, international education and exchange includes thousands of public and private programs, campus-based and national, to promote the sharing of ideas and experiences across borders; these include study abroad programs, citizen and scholarly exchanges, foreign students on United States campuses, area and foreign language studies, and global approaches to United States education; and WHEREAS, by participating in such programs, our young people develop a greater appreciation and respect for other people and their cultures and are more prepared to succeed in a global environment; and WHEREAS, we live in an increasingly interconnected world and improving global literacy among our citizens contributes significantly to our nation's foreign policy, economic competitiveness and national security; and WHEREAS, considering these challenging economic times, the importance of preparing citizens for engaging in a global economy is of paramount importance and can be fostered through educational and cultural exchange; and WHEREAS, through international education, the United States can establish a foundation for dialogue and partnership with the rest of the world and create the conditions for lasting global peace, security, and well-being; NOW, THEREFORE, I, BEVERLY EA YES PERDUE, Governor of the State ofNorth Carolina, do hereby proclaim November 14-18,2011, as "INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK" in North Carolina and I call upon the citizens and institutions of this state to participate in celebrating this week and to recognize the importance of international education in our lives and communities. BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE S WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State ofNorth Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this twenty-seventh day of October in the year of our Lord two thousand and eleven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-sixth.
