BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE GOVERNOR DR. MA_RTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY 2011 BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA A PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the-Reverend Dr. Martin Luther 1King, Jr. devoted his life to advancing equality, social justice and oppmiunity, and challenged all Americans to patiicipate in the never-ending work of creating a better society for all; and WHEREAS, January 17, 2011, marks the 25th Anniversary ofthe observance ofDr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a federal holiday, honoring his legacy and contributions to our nation and the world; and WHEREAS, in 1994 the United States Congress designated the Matiin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday as a national day of service and charged the Corporation for National and Community Services with leading this effort; and WHEREAS, millions of Americans continue to be inspired by the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and since 1994 have served their neighbors and communities on the MLK Day of Service; and WHEREAS, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday commemorated as a national day of service, and offers an opportunity for Americans to give back to their communities and beyond while making an ongoing commitment to service throughout the year; and WHEREAS, MLK Day of Service projects are being organized by a wide range ofMLK Commissions, AmeriCorps programs and non-profits; activities include volunteering to repackage and sort food donations, sorting donated goods for homeless children, volunteering at youth programs that provide wellness and nutrition activities for children, collecting books and school supplies for child care agencies and volunteering for programs that promote literacy among children; and WHEREAS, citizens ofNorth Carolina have an opportunity to participate in events across our state during the MLK Day of Service, January 17, 2011, as well as create and implement community service projects where need is identified; NOW, THEREFORE, I, BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE, Governor of the State ofNorth Carolina, do hereby proclaim January 17,2011, as "DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY" in North Carolina and urge all citizens to commend its observance by remembering and celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose it of equality and civil rights for all Americans helped shape our state and nation.
