BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE GOVERNOR D.E.A.R. DAY NATIONAL DROP EVERYTHING AND READ DAY! 2010 BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA A PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the citizens of the State ofNorth Carolina stand firmly committed to promoting reading as the catalyst for our students' future academic success, personal enrichment, and their ability to compete in a 21 51 Century global economy; and WHEREAS, April 12, the birthday of beloved children's author, Beverly Cleary, is a day of national activity to make reading together a family priority; and WHEREAS, the goal ofNational D.E.A.R. Day is to show families how easy, rewarding and fun it is to make time in their busy schedules to drop everything and read; and WHEREAS, families in the State of North Carolina will join millions of other families across the country as they celebrate National D.E.A.R. Day and drop everything and read together for 30 minutes; and WHEREAS, to help motivate families to share the joys of reading together, North Carolina's Public Schools and Public Libraries will host a variety of reading activities for children; and WHEREAS, the State ofNorth Carolina joins the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) and other organizations in encouraging reading as an investment in the communities' well being and long-term quality of life; and · NOW, THEREFORE, I, BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE, Governor of the State ofNorth Carolina, do hereby proclaim April 12, 2010, as "DROP EVERYTHING AND READ DAY" in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens. BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE IN WITNESS EREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State ofNorth Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this twelfth day of April in the year of our Lord two thousand and ten, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thi1iy-fourth.
