EASLEY ANNOUNCES LABOR DAY “BOOZE IT & LOSE IT” CAMPAIGN Law Enforcement Officers Unite to Remove Drunk Drivers from North Carolina Roads RALEIGH — Gov. Mike Easley announced today that state and local law enforcement officers will be out in force over the next two weeks as part of a Labor Day “Booze It & Lose It” campaign. Checkpoints and stepped-up patrols will be conducted across North Carolina Aug. 17 through Sept. 3 to save lives by removing impaired drivers from highways. “As North Carolinians celebrate the last few weeks of summer, I want to remind them to do so responsibly,” Easley said. “Law enforcement officers will be cracking down on impaired drivers to help keep our roads safe.” Alcohol-related traffic crashes are a consistent problem during heavy travel periods such as holidays. Last year, 96 North Carolina motorists were involved in fatal traffic crashes between Aug. 17 and Sept. 3, with 23 alcohol-related fatalities. State and local law enforcement officers will kick off the campaign with news media events at 2 p.m. on Aug. 16 at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex, 600 Independence Drive in Rocky Mount and at 10 a.m. on Aug. 17 at the Biltmore Estate (Picnic Pavilion), One Approach Road in Asheville.
