The week-long program runs year-round and is administered through the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, which is housed in the Governor’s Office. Since 1973, the Governor’s Page Program has provided high school students between the ages of 15 and 18 with the opportunity to spend a week working within the halls of state government. Each week, pages are assigned to one of 13 state government agencies, where many of them have a chance to attend press conferences, observe commission meetings and meet elected officials. Pages also assist in day-to-day office operations such as delivering legislative bills and agency messages, filing documents, assisting in mass mailings and answering telephones. Pages tour at least one of the following state government buildings each day: the State Capitol, Legislative Building, Executive Mansion, N.C. Supreme Court, Museum of Natural Sciences, Museum of History and N.C. Correctional Institute for Women. From September 2007 through September 2008, there were 372 high school students from 69 counties who participated in the Governor’s Page Program to learn about state government and public service. Students who are between the ages of 15 and 18 and in good academic standing at their school are eligible to apply. Students can serve as pages during most weeks in the year, but appointments are made on a first-come-first-serve basis. To apply, students must submit two recommendations and an official transcript along with the program application. For an application or additional information, contact Page Coordinator Tina Smalley at 1-800-820-4483, or visit the program online at www.volunteernc.org/code/govpage.htm. ###
