-.- y j t a sjt sbf wp salisbury n c m thursday september 14 1893 ~ highest of all in leavening power latest u s gov't report i x owd6r absolutely pure castoria bill arp and the bees a nworo th'.njf with him right wow than iliroeiallstu or free caliug i.atlauta constitutloa there is one good thinjf about get ting stung by a bee it makes you forget all other troubles for a little while i have had lots of fun with these bumblebees for the last few days and it renewed my youth time was when i thought it a big thing to fight yeller jackets and take my chances with the other boys the bravest boy was the biggest fool and would stay at the hole the longest and thresh all the leaves off of his brush and get stung before he surrendered 1 am not that brave cow aud 1 fight with exceeding caution but 1 have killed over two hundred iu two days aud fought fair and square ily weapozi is a orum pan and i take em coming and going but they crowd mo sometimes and my antics uttract attention among the naborb for they can see me in the up stairs piazza and one good lady in quired if major arp was subject to fits the bees come out where the weuthorlk>arding joins the floor and my repeated assaults havo made them mad generally up to this time they have ktu«g every member f tho family even to the little grandchild who lives with us and i'm gwing to exterminate them if it takes all sum mer we tried hot water but it will not reach them just think of that poor little ohild going round with one eye closed and afraid slie will lose the other one and mrs arp's head all swelled up with two bumps thut a phrenologist couldn't diagnose we ean't sit in the downstairs piazza with any security it is a bigger thing right now than bimetallism or free coinuge or the tabernacle meet ing in fact it ia a relief from poli ties to tight bees and study them in the books i wish the editors would hold up awhile and go to the woods and tight yoller jackets or wasps or hornets and get stung a few times it would be a relief to the country and i have heurd that such stings are good for rheumatism or any nervous affec tion and i know that it takes the con ceit out of a inad for a while my book says that the proper name is hum bio bee 1 but there is no hu mility about these nt my house there are from 70 to nix in a colony and ho i know i have nearly whipped the light they live only one summer and never rebuild in the same place the books suy there are three kinds — the masons and ti»e carpenters and the digtrers but what they are good for i don't know unless it is to make a man more willing to quit this world and prepare himself for another if here were no snukes and tarantulas and stinging things and deadly con tagions and demugoguges and thieves and fusses we wouldent wunt another world the little honey bee is a trump and a wonder from stem to stern it is good to ruminate about their wisdom and skill and their government just think of one queen being the mother of 20,000 and controlling them all more absolutely than ain human mother controls her children just think of 10,500 workers and only 00 drones in a colony these droaes are the gentlemen and remind you of our gentlemen loafers and swells who set about ou tho piazzas of the hotels and watch the girls go by but the drones don't enjoy themselves but a month or two the queen gets tired of them and gives her orders und then the massacre of st liartholomew begins in an hour's time every one is slain stung to death by the workers and their pufiy blouted carcasses dragged out and tumbled on the ground there is no little thing in nnture more wonderful than the honeycomb thiit these little workers make its mathematical construction gives the most space with the least enclosure the arched top and bottom of every eoli the exact and uniform thickness of every division and the wisdom shown in shaping the whole store bouse to euit the shape of the hive is indeed marvelous then there is the division of the workers into brigades and regiments and companies some to gather honey some to make wax some to build cells some to stand guard some to wait on the queen and be her escort on she moves around and a whole regiment to keep their winga foing hke revolving fans and supply resh air in the hive that fan busi ness makes the humming that is heard in the hive day and nijrht it is the flatter of the wings of the fanners fiow hi the workl they do everything hi the dark la a wonder to me i was talking to tnj friend mr busscy about i on the train some time ago and he told me confidentially that he wnfl experimenting to see if he couldent cross honey bees with lightning bugs and jfet up a b.-e that could see how to work at ni?m or in the dark he has applied for a patent on the idea but whether he has suceeedtd or not in his experiment i have not heard he was very sanguine aud the only trouble he fiaid was about the cross finding room in the tail for the fireworks and the sting too but mr bussey is an engineer on the state road and knows what ha is about the sting of the bee is said to be the most perfect war weapon ever invent ed it is exquisite in its mechanism it i^a hollow tube and yet the point of the finest cambric needle i immense when compared with it under the microscope the sting is perfect in its shape and smoothness so much so that the point is almost invisible whereas the point oi the needle under the same glass looks like a great rough crowbar wirh seams and ruts and ridges all over it this is the differ ence between the works of god and man and yet the almighty hand that made toe little bee with his wonderful instincts and attachments made the universe the boundless limitless uni verse where there are stars to be seen by the lord ot telescope wlo^e lf.rht take b0.oou havo made them mad generally up to this time they have ktu«g every member f tho family even to the little grandchild who lives with us and i'm gwing to exterminate them if it takes all sum mer we tried hot water but it will not reach them just think of that poor little ohild going round with one eye closed and afraid slie will lose the other one and mrs arp's head all swelled up with two bumps thut a phrenologist couldn't diagnose we ean't sit in the downstairs piazza with any security it is a bigger thing right now than bimetallism or free coinuge or the tabernacle meet ing in fact it ia a relief from poli ties to tight bees and study them in the books i wish the editors would hold up awhile and go to the woods and tight yoller jackets or wasps or hornets and get stung a few times it would be a relief to the country and i have heurd that such stings are good for rheumatism or any nervous affec tion and i know that it takes the con ceit out of a inad for a while my book says that the proper name is hum bio bee 1 but there is no hu mility about these nt my house there are from 70 to nix in a colony and ho i know i have nearly whipped the light they live only one summer and never rebuild in the same place the books suy there are three kinds — the masons and ti»e carpenters and the digtrers but what they are good for i don't know unless it is to make a man more willing to quit this world and prepare himself for another if here were no snukes and tarantulas and stinging things and deadly con tagions and demugoguges and thieves and fusses we wouldent wunt another world the little honey bee is a trump and a wonder from stem to stern it is good to ruminate about their wisdom and skill and their government just think of one queen being the mother of 20,000 and controlling them all more absolutely than ain human mother controls her children just think of 10,500 workers and only 00 drones in a colony these droaes are the gentlemen and remind you of our gentlemen loafers and swells who set about ou tho piazzas of the hotels and watch the girls go by but the drones don't enjoy themselves but a month or two the queen gets tired of them and gives her orders und then the massacre of st liartholomew begins in an hour's time every one is slain stung to death by the workers and their pufiy blouted carcasses dragged out and tumbled on the ground there is no little thing in nnture more wonderful than the honeycomb thiit these little workers make its mathematical construction gives the most space with the least enclosure the arched top and bottom of every eoli the exact and uniform thickness of every division and the wisdom shown in shaping the whole store bouse to euit the shape of the hive is indeed marvelous then there is the division of the workers into brigades and regiments and companies some to gather honey some to make wax some to build cells some to stand guard some to wait on the queen and be her escort on she moves around and a whole regiment to keep their winga foing hke revolving fans and supply resh air in the hive that fan busi ness makes the humming that is heard in the hive day and nijrht it is the flatter of the wings of the fanners fiow hi the workl they do everything hi the dark la a wonder to me i was talking to tnj friend mr busscy about i on the train some time ago and he told me confidentially that he wnfl experimenting to see if he couldent cross honey bees with lightning bugs and jfet up a b.-e that could see how to work at ni?m or in the dark he has applied for a patent on the idea but whether he has suceeedtd or not in his experiment i have not heard he was very sanguine aud the only trouble he fiaid was about the cross finding room in the tail for the fireworks and the sting too but mr bussey is an engineer on the state road and knows what ha is about the sting of the bee is said to be the most perfect war weapon ever invent ed it is exquisite in its mechanism it i^a hollow tube and yet the point of the finest cambric needle i immense when compared with it under the microscope the sting is perfect in its shape and smoothness so much so that the point is almost invisible whereas the point oi the needle under the same glass looks like a great rough crowbar wirh seams and ruts and ridges all over it this is the differ ence between the works of god and man and yet the almighty hand that made toe little bee with his wonderful instincts and attachments made the universe the boundless limitless uni verse where there are stars to be seen by the lord ot telescope wlo^e lf.rht take b0.oou
