l«5s9 we copy the following speech l»y general weaver from the weekly rsil ei<_rli neics and obsei~ver of au^usi 30th 1892 mr weaver no 1 cannot i will give the gentleman all he wants i was an ardent opponent of the democratic party during the anti-slav ery agitation and the iss es that rose out of the war it relates to the dis tant past and it is wholly unnecessary i followed tiie standard of the re publican party because i believed whilst i was doing it that they were ri^ht and were the friends of the poor the lowly and the downtrodden but when ! learned that the republicanism of 1877 was not the rp'mbiieanisoi of 1860 when i found that they had de monetized silver which had been good enough for everybody from the time of washington down to the time of general grant when i farther learned that the republican party had passed the act of january 14th 1s75 to con vert the greenbacks into interest bear ing debt and another net to refund the public debt and make it payable in gold coin thereby robbing the peo ple of fully 600,000,000 in this single enactment when 1 found they had given away hundreds of millions of civs of public hinds and were making no efforts to reclaim them when 1 learned further that they sought to perpetuate the national debt and in tended to make it the chief corner-stone of national banking and that bank notes were to be substituted for green backs as our s-ole piper circulation with the monstrous attendant evils of expansion and contraction at the will of the banking corporations and when i read the speech of john sherman de livered at mansfield ()., that such was io b the settled policy of the republi can party i concluded it was nine for me to quit and although i had been a member of the convention in 1s77 that nomi nated my colleague mr gear for governor of low i and had supported him in that convention for the nomi nation when 1 became atfjuaintel with these facts i wrote him an open and frank letter saying that i could no longer act with the republican party 1 could not do so because i found they were n longei 4 the friends of the poor and that while we had emancipated four millions of human beings they were now through vienns legislation pursuing a policy which wouhl unless arrested enslave many more million of the white people of this country the events of the pa4 ten years have justi fied my gravest fears applause tn the democratic side 1 left them then and challenged them to open combat an i have never asked for quarter nor struck my colors i have delivered blow for blow ever trying to keep within the bounds of proper political warfare i left the republican party when it a 80,000 majority in iowa and 4,000 m j rity in many c ngres-nonnl dis tricts over all opposition docs that look like hunting for an office does it not rather look like i was following my own convictions i leave thi house to judge of that matter when 1 began with the little hand of crreen backers to denounce these great wrongs i found the democratic party of the west which 1 h;.d so vigor ously fought in the past uuder the leadership of the gallant gentleman from missouri mr bland and others were leading in the good work of the remonetiz itiou of silver and they passed a bill through this house for its full and free reinstatement applause on the democratic side i found furthermore that when the bill for the free recoinage of silver reached the republican senate they emasculated it and that a republican senator from my own slate mr alli son was the gentleman who accom plished the result having stabbed every greenback note in the back with word except they now sought to send silver forth maimed and crippled only to he coined in limited quantities and then only on government account i found the democracy of the north east and of many other sections of the country bitterly opposed to the destruc tion of the greenback currency and l s wicked conversion into interest bearing debt and early in the winter of 1878 they passed a bill through this house which put a stop to this destruction the little peter cooper green backers had aroused the country and many staunch old jackson and jefferson democrats rolled up their sleeves and went to work in their own parly with the results stated applause on the democratic sidp rimy republicans in defiance of their party leaders j uned in the good work also as the battle for equal rights and fair play waxed hot 1 sought affiliation with the demo crats of my district and state and we lyive ever since in ray district and of ten in the staie co-operated and we have made it very lively for you from that day to this and i advise you tn keep your eyes open for there i still i more fun ahead 1 have never joined the democratic party i am a member to-day of the l nion lab.or party into which the greenback ' party has practically merged along with seine other labor organizations | while it is true that 1 have nevei joined the democratic party i hav felt it to be my duty to utk'.iate will that party in this house iu mv st ife and in mv district whenever it was practicable thr u-!i the actions of sep ! arate conventions u'cause i believe ' the democratic part is nearer to
